The Chalé Tavares Cardoso is a historic chalet in Belém, Pará, Brazil. It belongs to the Municipality of Belém and houses the Public Municipal Library of Icoaraci (Biblioteca Pública Municipal de Icoaraci), also known as Avertano Rocha Public Municipal Library (Biblioteca Pública Municipal Avertano Rocha).
Chalé Tavares Cardoso (Biblioteca Pública Municipal Avertano Rocha)
Located in the district of Icoaraci, in Belém do Pará, it was built in an eclectic style, typical of the Belle Époque, in the middle of the 19th century - between 1870 and 1912 - to be the summer home of the Portuguese bookseller Eduardo Tavares Cardoso, owner of the Universal Library during the Rubber Cycle. Crafted in delicate curves with beautiful banisters on the porch. One of the most impressive elements in the mansion is the extensive wooden staircase and the large windows with glass. The sumptuous chalet started to host the Public Library in 1972 as an extension of the Avertano Rocha Municipal Gymnasium. After a long period of abandoned ruin, it was completely restored in 1999 to house the Municipal Public Library, the Museum of Popular Arts on the ground floor of the building, the first public museum of the District of Icoaraci, thus constituting an important cultural center . It was Deactivated by the city of Belém in 2014, due to structural problems and currently, the Chalet underwent a renovation and once again receives the Municipal Public Library Avertano Rocha.
