A. J. Joseph (1945- 2015) was a distinguished music director and lyricist from Kerala, India, renowned for his contributions to Malayalam cinema and devotional music. His career spanned several decades, during which he composed music for films and devotional albums, leaving an indelible mark on the Malayalam music industry.

Early Life

A. J. Joseph was born in Kottayam, Kerala, in 1945 to A. J. John and Rosamma. He began his career as a guitarist in the theatre group of the late N. N. Pillai. He also worked as a choir director.

Devotional Music

A. J. Joseph gained significant acclaim for his devotional songs, many of which were performed by the legendary singer Dr. K. J. Yesudas. One of his most celebrated compositions is the Christmas carol "Yahoodiyayile Oru Gramathil," released in 1987, which has remained a perennial favorite during the festive season. This song was released under Tharangini Records, a prominent music label founded by Dr. K. J. Yesudas. Joseph's collaboration with Yesudas extended to several other devotional albums, including "Sneha Pratheekam" (1987) and "Sweet Melodies Vol IV" (1989). These albums featured songs that resonated with listeners for their spiritual depth and melodic richness.

Association with Tharangini Studios

A. J. Joseph's work in Malayalam cinema includes composing music for films such as "Ente Kaanakkuyil" (1985), "Ee Kaikalil" (1986), and "Kunjattakilikal" (1986). His compositions in these films were well-received, showcasing his ability to blend melody with the narrative needs of the cinema. During his stint as film song composer, though very brief, Joseph produced many memorable songs, including ‘Ore Swaram Ore Niram’. The song fetched K S Chitra her first state award in the best female playback singer category in 1985 Joseph started a western musical school in Kottayam, and was the choir master at Lourdes Church there.

Legacy

A. J. Joseph passed away on August 19, 2015, at the age of 70, at his home in Eerayilkadavu, Kottayam. His contributions to Malayalam film and devotional music continue to be cherished by music enthusiasts.
