Barbara Anne Lehman was born on December 15, 1943 in Cleveland, Ohio.  Her mother was living there while her father was away fighting in WWII in the U.S. Army as a First Lieutenant in New Guinea. Upon his return after the war, she and her mother moved back to her mother's home town of St. Paul, Minnesota. 

She attended grade school at St. Leo's catholic grade school in St. Paul before attending High School at Derham Hall. Barb, graduated from Derham Hall High School in St. Paul, Minnesota in 1961, earned a B.S. from the College of St. Catherine's and later completed her M.A. Barb worked her first year of teaching in Colorado Springs, Colorado before moving back to Minnesota. She then was the Aquatics Director at the St. Paul Jewish Community Center for one year. That was when she moved over to Minneapolis and started in the Robbinsdale School District. Barb worked for the Robbinsdale School District west of Minneapolis, Minnesota for 41 years as a teacher, coach, and in her final 7 years, as Athletic Director for Cooper High School. After retirement, Barb was a consultant for the Robbinsdale School district and served as secretary to the Classic Lake Athletic Conference. Among Barb's numerous honors, in 2008, Mary Pawlenty, wife of Governor Tim Pawlenty, awarded her the "The Special Merit Award" which is presented by "National Girls and Women in Sports Day" to individuals who exemplify the highest levels of commitment to breaking barriers for girls and women in sport. [1] The Robbinsdale School Board voted unanimously to name the Cooper athletic stadium the Barbara A. Lehman Stadium in 2009.[2]
