Bio

[edit]

I'm a college student in Washington[1]. I like to play the violin and like listening to a violinist named Itzhak Perlman. I'm also into studying medical studies like psychology, anatomy, ect. It makes me curious and want to study more about them. I also like listening to music especially Korean music ( k-pop) and pop songs in America. They help me feel better when I get nervous or when I don't feel good.

I'm currently learning about Wikipedia in my English class and many things got me interested. One of them was that anyone in this world can edit information in Wikipedia and prove their words by putting links or cites. There are so many subjects in Wikipedia but I think I'll be mostly editing about violin, dogs, and cosmetics. I played the violin for more than 10 years so I'll be able to give many information about violin, and I have lots of interests in dogs and cosmetics, so I wish I can get more information about them in Wikipedia.

Article critique

[edit]

I visited the Korea page on Wikipedia, and found three aspects worth commenting on biased information, lack of information, and old citations. A paragraph about education had sentences that are one sided and not fact checked. Also in the music heading, there is not enough information about recent music called K-Pop which is popular in many countries. Most of the citations are lead to books that were written less than year 2013. The fact that everyone can change the information makes Wikipedia more criticizing.

Biased information

The education paragraph gives basic information about how many years of school they go to, education fee, and much more. However, there is a biased information that I wanted to criticize. The writer said "the education system is criticized for emphasizing too much upon passive learning and memorization. The South Korean education system is rather notably strict and structured as compared to its counterparts in most Western societies." First, there was no way to check the fact that the education system is too much upon memorization and passive learning. Second, by comparing to the most western countries without any information also looked biased. For example, the writer should have added a citation or link to prove what the writer was talking about. There is no evidence in his statement and also there is too much of the writer's opinion on it.

Lack of information

By looking at the page critically I found the article needed more information, one of them was the music paragraph. In the paragraph the writer only says about the traditional music but the culture has changed and new time started. These days K-pop are famous all around the world but there is no information about them. Also they should add animal section about traditional tigers. Korea used lots of stories, costumes about tigers. For example, adding a heading about animals and putting pictures of them and also being specific about how tigers were worshiped those days. The language part had lack of information about how Hangul was made, what made the king to make Hangul, and how it got spread out to the people. Information never stops coming out and articles need to be fast about them.

Citations

Citations are very important source in Wikipedia because every one can edit information and it needs proof of the writer's words. However, in the Korea page most of the citations came from books that were written long time ago. In only days information can be changed and added, the article needs to have current citations so it can keep up. Instead of using citation to a book there are many latest articles that give current information. For instance, searching an article on Google by reading it critique and look how current the article is and upload the citation. The history for example use many citations linked to books, but history always changes so giving a citation on the book is a bad idea.

Conclusion

By reading many articles about Korea and looking at it critique helped me to find whether the article is reliable or not. There were some biased information, lack of information that needed specific information and headings, and citations that need to be more current.
