81-71M is a refurbished version of Metrovagonmash 81-717/81-714 metro rolling stock. It is used on the Prague Metro. Similar modernizations (81-717M/81-714M) are used on the metro systems of Tbilisi, Yerevan and Baku.
A nearly identical set was delivered to Kyiv Metro as part of the Slavutich project, numbered 81-553.1 (12Mt), 81-554.1 (13Mt) and 81-555.1 (14Mt).
A train consists of five cars, two end carriages (2Mt), two trailer cars (3Mt), and one intermediate driving car (4Mt) in the middle.
Development
[edit]When it became clear in the 1990s that the old soviet metro trains of the series 81-717.1/714.1 and Ečs wouldn't need an overhaul but a full rebuild to further operate savely, Škoda Transportation developed a prototype of a fully modernised 81-71 train which was presented to the public and went into service in 1996. In the following years, nearly the full fleet of old 81-71 trains was refurbished, except a five-car set, which is preserved at Zličín (B) depot for special occasions, and one 81-717.1 carriage, which is stored in the MHD museum Stresovice.
Operation
[edit]Currently, there are 93 sets of 81-717M/714M operating in Prague metro, of which 41 are running on line A and 52 on line B[1][2].

[edit]Thought looking similar, there are technical differences between the 81-71M and the 81-717M/714M.
Tbilisi
[edit]In the mid-2000s, Tbilisi Metro started modernizing its Ezh3/Em508T and 81-717/714 type trains based on the 81-71M, also under usage of the same front part.

[edit]In cooperation with his Russian partner ZAO Wagonmash, Škoda Transportation produced a new underground train for Kyiv metro based on the 81-71 series, where Škoda Transportation took part in supplying traction and pneumatic equipment.[3] Škoda also produced the fiberglass front parts for the 12Mt end cars which were also used for the 81-71M trains.
