Huntingdonshire

[edit]

Sport

[edit]

Bandy

[edit]

Huntingdonshire is the birthplace of bandy, a sport recognised by the [International Olympic Committee], and played in over 25 countries in all continents across the world. The sport is played on ice, on a pitch the size of a football pitch, between two teams of 11 players who have sticks and aim to hit a small round ball into a goal. It is particularly popular in Norway, Sweden, Finland, Russia, Kazakhstan, Canada, United States and Belarus.

Although similar games to bandy were played in Russia throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, the first recorded games of bandy are from the Winter of 1813 where the sport became popular on the frozen fenlands of Huntingdonshire, Cambridgeshire, Norfolk and Lincolnshire. It was the Bury Fen Bandy Club, based near Bluntisham, that codified the sport in 1882 and introduced it into other countries. The first international match took place between Bury Fen and Haarlem Bandy Club of the Netherlands. The Bury Fen club were exceptionally dominant throughout the 19th century, losing their first match in the Winter of 1890. The man who codified the sport, [Charles Goodman Tebbutt] was born in Bluntisham in 1860 and his home-made bandy stick can now be viewed in the Norris Museum in St Ives.

Despite the sports history, and an English victory at the European Bandy Championships held in Switzerland in 1913, the sport did not retain it's popularity after the First World War and for the most of the 20th century the sport was not played in England. However in 2010, the Bandy Federation of England was formed to govern the game throughout England and is based in Ramsey.

Fen skating

[edit]

Fen skating is another sport that originated in Huntingdonshire, alongside neighbouring Cambridgeshire and Norfolk. The golden age of the sport is considered to be the second half of the 19th century when the [National Skating Association] was formed in Cambridge, Cambridgeshire in 1879.

Football

[edit]

[Huntingdon Town FC] play in the Premier Division of the United Counties League, that is one of 14 leagues on Level Nine of the English football pyramid. The league features teams from Northamptonshire, Bedfordshire, Rutland, Lincolnshire and Leicestershire.

Huntingdon Town FC were formed in 1980 and are nicknamed 'The Croms'. From 1980 to 1995 however, the official name of the club was 'Sun FC'. For the 1996 season the Huntingdon Town name was resurrected from history. The teams colours are red, black and yellow; with their home kit being red and black stripes. They play at Jubilee Park to the north of the town, and have been playing there since 2003. They became champions of Division One of the United Counties League in 2012.

"In 1066, Kimbolton with the lands of its soke, formed the only Huntingdonshire estate of King Harold, who is believed to have had a hunting lodge here." standrew-kimbolton.org.uk/?page_id=11

Though peaceful and fairly hidden today, the church in Stow Longa has had a remarkable history. Stow Longa was confirmed a prebend by Pope Eugene III on the 6th February 1146, and again by Pope Alexander III on the 5th January 1163.[3] A minster or mother-church of the local estate (which included Stow Longa, Spaldwick, Easton, Little Catworth, Barham and Upthorpe) before its importance was subsumed by Spaldwick and Kimbolton, St Botolph's wealth and importance attracted noted figures to the prebendary, such as Thomas Wolsey, who was Stow Longa's prebend from 1509 to 1514.
