Belgium – Republic of Texas relations refers to the historical foreign relations between the Republic of Texas and Belgium. Relations started in 1837, a year after the Texas Revolution, when Belgium became one of the first nations to recogonize the new country. Relations effectivly ended in 1846 upon the annexation of Texas by the United States.

Belgian Sympathies

Belgium, much like Texas had recently become independent, before its independence in 1831 Belgium was part of The Netherlands, it took a revolution for Belgium to Become a Sovereign State.[1] 1836 Just five years after Belgian Independence, Texas won its revolution, becominga Republic, independent from Mexican Rule. Many nations considered the new republic a paraiah, and questioned if it could support and defend itself,[2] Just as the British and Dutch had questioned of Belgium a few years prior.

Trade

Texas exported Cotton, Corn and other raw materials to Belgium, Belgium exported Iron, Tea, Beer and many other products to Texas.[3]

Diplomatic Relations

Belgium had an embassy in Austin, and Texas had an embassy in Brussels[4]
