In order to solve for the geodesics of the Schwarzschild solution, we use the fact that, for any Killing vector field $\xi ^{a}$ of the spacetime and any geodesic with tangent vector $t^{a}$, the quantity $\xi ^{a}t_{a}$ is conserved along the geodesic. These constants of motion will simplify the problem of finding geodesics in the Schwarzschild solution to a one-dimensional motion in an effective potential.
