About Phil

[edit]

My name is Philip Vining.

I live in Winchester, Hampshire, UK.

Job: Computer Programmer

- IBM System z mainframes, all the way back to IBM System/360 mainframes (S/360 only for a short period).

- MVS, VM, and some, but not much, VSE.

Education: Mathematics Degree, University of Surrey

Work:

- From 1973 to 1986 I worked for Hampshire County Council — as a computer programmer in the Computer Division of the County Treasure's Department.

- Since 1986 I've worked for International Business Machines — as a computer programmer (my preference)/software engineer (IBM's preference) in IBM Software Group (SWG).

IBM encourages it's employees to participate in blogs and wikis (if they wish too). However, the contributions IBM employees make to blogs and wikis are the employees responsibility and not IBM's. IBM does expects it's employees to be constructive and behave responsibly.
My updates and contributions are not part of my work for IBM, and I make them at home and in my own time. I do not use IBM's equipment or services to make them. I am responsible for my updates. IBM is not. Views and opinions I may express are not necessarily the views and opinions of IBM. I will not reveal IBM's commercial secrets, business plans, intellectual property, financial data, or any other confidential information that IBM may possess.

Interests: Science - particularly Physics; Space Exploration; Cosmology; Mathematics; News; Music (Pop, Rock, Blues (Chicago electric), Soul, Folk (but only the interesting stuff), Jazz (but only the stuff that can be listen to), and Classical (if I could find the good stuff)).

This User ...

[edit]
  • This user may be a native speaker of English. However...
    • This user can't spell Ingerlesh.
    • This user can't grammar English.
    • This user can't punctuate En,g,lish.
    • This user can't touch-type.
    • But apart from all that, he's pretty good at it!
  • This user eats roast beef ... with yorkshire pudding ... but not gravy.
  • This user eats roast lamb ... with mint sauce ... and yorkshire pudding ... but still not gravy.
  • This user eats beef curry.
  • This user loves bakewell tart. It's the almonds!
  • This user loves battenberg cake. It's the almonds!
  • This user uses the BBC News web site as a primary source of news and current information.
  • This use has written and run REXX computer programs for the following computer platforms:
    • IBM VM/CMS
    • IBM MVS/TSO/E (with and without ISPF)
    • IBM MVS NetView
    • IBM OS/2
    • IBM PC-DOS
    • Microsoft Windows NT 5 (and IBM Object REXX)
    • Microsoft Windows XP (and IBM Object REXX)
  • This user understands IBM mainframe PSWs — System/360, System/370, System/390 and System z Program Status Words.
    • Yes, System/390 should probably be ESA/390.
    • And yes, this user reads Principles of Operation manuals. But not the really hard bits!
  • This user understands the basics of IBM System/3270 Data Streams.
  • This use has written and run computer programs for the IBM OS/VS1 mainframe operating system.
  • This user understands the basics of Einstein’s Theory of Relativity. Both Special Relativity and General Relativity. It's simple. Distance, time and speed and are all relative to the observer. The are no special observers, directions, distances, times or speeds — other than the speed of light. The speed of light is constant for all observers. Gravity and acceleration are indistinguishable. Gravity bends space and time. Oh, nearly forgot: It's hard. And I might only understand/remember some of the basics.
    • E=MC2 means that if you can completely convert a piece matter to energy, the amount of energy you get (E) is calculated by multiplying the mass of the piece of matter(M) by the speeds of light (C), and that then multiplied by the speed of light (C) again. It's nuclear fission. What happens in nuclear reactors and atom bombs. However, since the speed of light is constant, all E=MC2 says is that the amount of energy you get out is directly proportional to the amount mass that goes in. Twice as much mass always produces twice as much energy.

My Updates to Wikipedia

[edit]
  1. East Tisted — Created the article for the village of East Tisted in Hampshire, UK (on Sunday 21 January 2007).
  2. AFC Basingstoke — Updated the AFC Basingstoke article – a local Football (soccer) club, Basingstoke, UK (on Sunday 28 January 2007).
  3. CMS EXEC — Created the article for the IBM mainframe VM/CMS computer programming language CMS EXEC. It's a command procedure, or scripting, computer programming language (on Saturday 10 February 2007).
  4. EXEC 2 — Created the article for the IBM mainframe VM/CMS computer programming language EXEC 2. It's a command procedure, or scripting, computer programming language (on Saturday 10 February 2007).
  5. OS/VS1 — Created the article for the IBM mainframe computer operating system named Operating System/Virtual Storage 1 (OS/VS1) (on Friday 2 March 2007). It was only available from/sold by IBM during the 1970s and 1980s. It is no longer supported by IBM. It was, however, the first IBM mainstream operating system to support virtual storage (also known as virtual memory).
