Prof Phil West

Prof Phil West is a professional forester and forest scientist. He worked for 20 years in the Tasmanian laboratory of the principal Australian research body, the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation. His research speciality was the growth behaviour of trees in forests and modelling their growth for the prediction of wood yields.

He left CSIRO in 1997 and moved to sub-tropical northern New South Wales. There, he undertook consultancy work for Australian forest owners. He was also a contract lecturer in the Forestry School of Southern Cross University, teaching units in ‘Measuring Trees and Forests’, ‘Plantation Silviculture’ and ‘Plant Physiology and Ecology’. He is the author of ‘Tree and Forest Measurement’, a text book on forest measurement in its 3^rd edition, and ‘Growing Plantation Forests’, a text book on the science of plantation forestry in its 2^nd edition. Both are written for students, professional foresters, scientists and laypersons.

He retired at the end of 2017, but remains a member of the Emeritus Faculty of Southern Cross University. He continues his research work on forest measurement practice and forest growth behaviour.
