A Guitar Festival usually consists of a series of concerts focused on the celebration of the guitar and it's players. Guitar festivals can (at times) be synonymous with a competition, but this is usually a misnomer as guitar competitions are usually referred to as such. Some guitar festivals are held in honor of a famous guitarist such as in the case of Andrés Segovia. Incidentally it is not just a festival honoring the late Andrés Segovia but is coupled with a guitar competition.
An example of a "pure" guitar festival amongst others would be the International Guitar Festival, Costa Rica (Spanish: Festival Internacional de Guitarra, Costa Rica) held in the National Theater of Costa Rica (Spanish: Teatro Nacional de Costa Rica). Most guitar festivals whether regional or international are held on a regular cycle i.e. yearly.
Guitar festivals offer an opportunity for aspiring guitarists to hone their craft, and gain much needed experience from their piers in a relatively friendly atmosphere. They are also used to expose the public to the musical arts, specifically the guitar.
