This is a list of the holders of the most senior gyōji (referee) position in sumo. They are always known as Kimura Shonosuke (木村庄之助). Like all Japan Sumo Association officials they have a mandatory retirement age of 65.[1] This meant that the 32nd Kimura was able to serve for only one tournament. By contrast the 27th Kimura, who was promoted at the expectionally young age of 51, served for a record 79 tournaments and 1185 match days. The 35th Shonosuke, Junichi Uchida, had no wrong calls during his four and a half years as a tate-gyoji (one of the top two positions).[2] The most recent, the 37th Kimura Shonosuke, retired in March 2015 and has yet to be replaced as in the opinion of the Sumo Association there is no referee with sufficient skill or experience to hold the position.[3]
