Llyfrgell Genedlaethol Cymru - The National Library of Wales

The National Library of Wales & Wikipedia

[edit]

During August 2008 The National Library of Wales (Website) will be running a pilot programme for sharing its collections through online collaboration on Wikipedia and Wicipedia.

The primary focus of this work will be the adding of images from the John Thomas Collection to relevant pages of the site in order to enhance articles already existing on the wiki.

During this time we will be monitoring the impact of our work and we welcome any comments you might have on our Talk Page. This pilot will help to guide the nature and extent of future activity undertaken by NLW in conjunction with Wikipedia and other external sites.

About The National Library of Wales

[edit]

The National Library of Wales is one of Wales’s chief cultural institutions. It acts as the memory of the nation, storing and giving access to recorded knowledge, in all forms, about Wales. The Library is also the largest storehouse in Wales of information and knowledge on all subjects. As a legal deposit library it receives copies of most books and other printed material published in the United Kingdom and Ireland.

You can read more about The National Library of Wales either on the relevant Wiki Page or on the National Library of Wales Website

Llyfrgell Genedlaethol Cymru & Wicipedia

[edit]

Yn ystod mis Awst 2008, bydd Llyfrgell Genedlaethol Cymru (Gwefan) yn cynnal rhaglen beilot er mwyn rhannu ei chasgliadau trwy gydweithrediad ar-lein ar Wikipedia a Wicipedia.

Prif nod y gwaith hwn fydd ychwanegu delweddau o Gasgliad John Thomas at dudalennau perthnasol ar y safle, er mwyn cyfoethogi erthyglau sydd eisoes yn bodoli ar y wici.

Byddwn yn monitro effaith ein gwaith yn ystod y cyfnod hwn, felly bydd croeso i chi adael sylwadau ar ein 'Talk Page'. Bydd y peilot hwn yn ein cynorthwyo wrth ystyried natur unrhyw waith a ymgymerir ag ef gan LlGC, ar y cyd â Wikipedia a safleoedd allanol eraill yn y dyfodol, ac i ba raddau y gwneir gwaith felly.

Ynglŷn â Llyfrgell Genedlaethol Cymru

[edit]

Llyfrgell Genedlaethol Cymru yw un o brif sefydliadau diwylliannol Cymru. Mae’n gweithredu fel cof y genedl, drwy storio a darparu mynediad i wybodaeth a gofnodwyd, ar bob ffurf, am Gymru. Y Llyfrgell hefyd yw’r storfa fwyaf yng Nghymru o wybodaeth ar bob pwnc. Gan ei bod yn llyfrgell adnau cyfreithiol mae’n derbyn copïau o’r rhan fwyaf o lyfrau a defnyddiau printiedig eraill a gyhoeddir yn y Deyrnas Unedig ac yn Iwerddon

A Note on Rights

[edit]

During this pilot process the Library will be sharing unique images from it's collections with Wikipedia and Wicipedia. We've spent a great deal of time reviewing the rights since deciding to embark on this project and I think it will be useful to share the major points:

We'll be uploading images under the "The use of this file is permitted only on Wikipedia." option. We realise that this schedules the image for 'speedy deletion' however we will be appealing this as appropriate by adding the {{hangon}} tag to the image page and leaving a comment similar to the below on the related talk page:

This image has been released by the National Library of Wales under a pilot scheme for sharing digitised images with Wikipedia and Wicipedia articles. See User:Paul Bevan for more information. It is intended that this image be added to the Gwilym Marles page. We believe that there is no equivalent openly licensed or free image which could fulfill this purpose.

Our hope is that this approach will allow us to begin the process of sharing our images with the wider community without breaching our own organisational responsibilities.

We will be adding images only to articles which will substantially benefit from the addition of these images. We believe that this is a judicious use of non-free images which do not have a free equivalent and complies with the 10 criteria in the Non-free Content Policy.

We will not be creating articles but encourage people to suggest articles which might benefit from an image from the John Thomas collection. You can search the collection by going to the eresources catalogue, choosing Keyword and then selecting "John Thomas Collection" from the drop-down.
