Joseph Gornall was a pioneer in food technology. Joseph Gornall was born on the 16 June 1856, the tenth and youngest child of Joseph and Mary(nee Jenkinson) of Upper Birks Farm, Eagland Hill.[1] He married Elizabeth Hoyles on the 10th February 1880 [2] and they farmed at Clay Lane Head Farm, Cabus. Joseph and Elizabeth had nine children, six girls and three boys[1].

In the 1890s, Joseph Gornall was instrumental in modernising the Lancashire cheese industry, employing cheese-making techniques that are still used in Lancashire today.
