Description of Articles
[edit]The OpenLearning movement began among people building and using free learning management systems (LMS). Indeed, when MOOC's and full-blown OpenEDU was born, few people actually recognized that had it not been for open-sourced LMS software distributions, that graduate faculty and students in colleges of education might never have even been exposed to the 'Open Access' paradigms already old-hat among knowledge mgmt, publication, and software engineering academics, who had previously been forging toward more open models in isolation from each other, each within their own circles.
The below articles provide descriptions and basic information as an introduction to LMS systems. It is not comprehensive for free or proprietary LMS systems, but includes a good selection of some of the leading FREE LMS systems, technologies and organizations producing them, as well as a smaller selection of some non-free technologies and LMS systems that provide a bit of context for comparison.
