Among the all ancient temples of Kerala, Puthiyakaavu Sree Bhagavathi Temple, a small temple in the district of Kozhikode. Devotees from all parts of Kerala come and bow before the all powerful goddess, seeking an end to their afflictions and to receive blessings. The temple is just 21Km from Kozhikode and is located at a rural-looking area.

Chanting of Her names and mantras destroys the feelings of ignorance and pride like the flames of fire that overcomes the darkness. Many are the miracles that we see right in front of the Goddess.

The History and Mythology

The Puthiyakaavu Sree Bhagavathi Temple is a famous temple of the Hindu mother goddess Bhagawati. The temple is located near Kozhikode in the Indian state of Kerala and is one of the most popular temples in the state. Bhagawati is one of the most popular deities in the area, Sree Ruthiraalakaali amma( Bhadhrakaali), Sree Nagakaali amma and Sree Ittikurumba Bhagavathi ( Parvathi)worshipped at the temple. Lord Shiva as sree Kariyathan is also worshiped at the temple. Sree Gulika devan,Sree Dandankali and Nagangal are also be there as upadevathas.

The temple was renovated recently with the immense support from devotees and well wishers from this village and from far and wide.

Puthiyakaavilamma has been caring for the devotees who throng the shrine with their woes. Sudden deaths in the family, ill-ominous events, accidents by fire, loss of honour and pride, financial crisis, prolonged illness and miseries, obstacles in marriages, burdens and shame through children and many more such pains have been eased away by the Goddess. Devotees believe that constant prayers have never been left unanswered.

Bhagavathy (Bhagavathi) or Devi is considered as female aspect of the divine Shakthi, as conceived by the Shakta tradition of Hinduism. Shakthi is considered as the female counterpart without whom the male aspect remains impotent. Shakthi is the energy and Shakthi worship is a vital part of Hindu Tradition.Devi manifests herself as Creator (Durga or the Divine Mother), Preserver (Lakshmi, Parvathy and Saraswaty) and Destroyer (Mahishasura-Mardini, Kali). Devi is worshipped mostly in the form of divine mother.

         The ‘Punar Prathista’ or re-installation ceremony of Sree puhtiyakavu temple was held on January , by temple main thantree sree Pateri
Sunil Namboothirpad. Every year in january month in the same day of punar prtatishta ,devotees celeebrates the prathishta dinam as a 

feastival of all peoples.

Thira Mahothsavam (Kumbham 10)

The festival of the temple comes in Kumbham10(feb 22). It begins with Kodiyettu (Flag hoisting ceremony) before 1 week of the festival day.Elaneer ezhunnellippu over neighbouring areas (houses in the Thattakam) and then Aarattu is conducted on this day. Theyyam artists play the thira on this day ,it starts from the evening to the morning of the next day .Thalappoli is performed by girls on this day of the festival. The young girls and ladies attired in traditional dressing hold a thaalam (a round tray) with flowers, a lighted oil lamp, and offerings to the Goddess. The Goddess will be pleased on the girls and bless them with beauty, wisdom, health, wealth and joy.Thalappoli statrs at the evening, from the nearest area of the temple and ends at temple with Paandimelam by experienced famous artists .

Guruthi Mahothsavam

Guruthi pooja is a pooja where the guruthi is offered to the Goddess. It represents blood & blood represents vitality. So guruthi pooja is where you offer the vitality to the Goddess .This is a ritual done at late evening to invoke the goddess.

Navarathri aghosham is a famous festival,which attracts large number of devotees.On Vijayadasami day of the Navarathri Utsavam,Vidyarambham is conducted. Babies of 3 to 6 age group are initiated to read and write in the presence of Devi Saraswathy. Durgashtami, Mahanavami and Vijayadasami are very important.
