Ingrid James (born 30 Dec) is an Australian jazz singer, contemporary voice teacher, producer, lyricist (based in Brisbane, Queensland).[1][2][3]
Musical Career
[edit]Ingrid James is an Australian Jazz Singer, recording artist, lyricist, mentor and producer based in Brisbane. James won Best Jazz Album for both "Just Visiting" and "Lazy Afternoon" - The Queensland Recording Association “Sunnie Awards” (2001/2002); Best Jazz Song "Time To Be" (co-written with Louise Denson) - QMusic Awards (2007)[4]; and in 2006 was nominated for the Australian Bell Awards for Best Jazz Album "Essence"[5];. Ingrid James has completed a Masters in Music Studies (Vocal Pedagogy, 2018) at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music [6] following postgraduate studies in Music Studies at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music (2002); and the Graduate Diploma in Media through the Australian, Film Television & Radio School, Sydney (AFTRS, 1990).[7] Prior to entering into a full-time music career, she worked in production for ABC-TV in Brisbane for over 10 years.
James has performed extensively around Australia at festivals such as the Adelaide Fringe Festival[8], Melbourne International Jazz Festival, Manly Jazz Festival, Kiama Jazz Festival, Devonport Jazz Festival[9], the Brisbane International Jazz[10] and Valley Jazz Festivals as well as The Spiegeltent for the Brisbane Festival[11]. Local highlights include soloist with Queensland Symphony[12] and Philharmonic Orchestras with maestro Tommy Tycho[13]. International highlights include Ronnie Scotts in London[14] as well as Wimbledon International Music Festival [15] , 606 Club, Jazz Pizza Express, Spice of Life, tours in the UK, Prague[16] and in France, where she opened for the Blue Note Jazz Festival in Monaco [17]. James has recorded 5 international CD's in the UK, USA and France as well as 6 domestic CDs. James has continued recording and writing music and has a private teaching studio[18]. James is also Producer/Host of The Jazz Singers' Jam Night held monthly at the Brisbane Jazz Club (2001 to present); Artistic Director of the Brisbane Vocal Jazz Festival (2016 to present);[19] Producer Unesco's International Jazz Day MBS Light (2018 to present).
A more recent project includes producing and hosting Voices of Tomorrow [20] as a collaboration between the Jazz Singers' Jam Night at the Brisbane Jazz Club (from December 2020. This project celebrates school ages students both vocally and instrumentally. James also facilitates workshops and masterclasses for visiting/touring artists.
In 2012 and 2014, James was invited to record and tour with the legendary USA trombonist, Bill Watrous[21][22] in “Lost My Heart”[23][24] and saxophonist Eric Marienthal in “Blue Confluence”.[25][26] Both these projects were recorded in Los Angeles and produced by James Lewis’ San Gabriel 7 projects. Since then she collaborated with French pianist, Alexis Tcholakian,[27] on an originals project called "Trajectoire"[28][29] and most recently a CD/Australian Tour project with Czech Republic guitarist, Libor Smoldas[30] Organ Trio "Midnight Sun". Currently, James is a member of The Brisbane Jazz Orchestra (formerly called Brisbane Contemporary Jazz Orchestra), a 19 piece big band.[31].

[edit]James is a strong advocate for encouraging emerging jazz vocalists in her community and through the creation of the iconic Jazz Singers' Jam Night (from 2001 to present), she has provided a "live" performance avenue through which 3 generations of jazz singers have been able to test, learn and develop their skills in front of supportive audiences at the Brisbane Jazz Club.
