The Ark of Prince Edward Island new article content .. In 1974 The New Alchemists of Cape Cod, Massachusetts sumbitted a prosal to the Canadian Govehernment for the Ark of PEI. The proposed structure would house and feed a family, using only organic growing methods and non fossil fuel energy. The building was designed by architects Ole Hammarlund and David Bergmark. The construction began October 1975 with the architects as construction managers and the building was completed in August 1976 and inaugurated by Premier Pierre Trudeau. The PEI Ark was likely the first attempt to make a net zero energy building which also provided the food of the inhabitants. The 2000 sq feet production greenhouse contained 40 fishtanks which served for producing Tilapia fed by sun generated algae as well as providing passive solar heating storage. Plants were waterd with the nutrient rich fashtan water. The residence section was heated passively through a smaller integrated greenhouse and an active array of solar collectors storing heated water in the basement.
