Helmuth Prieß (* March 18 1939 in Hildesheim; † April 26 2012 in Bonn) was one of the founders and speaker of the association Darmstädter Signal[1] a critical forum of citizens in uniform. As a critical soldier Prieß got repeatedly into conflicts with his superiors.
Life
[edit]Prieß achieved prematurely the high school diploma and completed then an apprenticeship as a wholesaler. Afterwards he became professional soldier. In the army he was concerned commander e.g. with atom transports. 1972 he was transferred to the Army office in Cologne because of his declared opposition to nuclear weapons. There he was among other inspection chief of a troops School. He was because of the statement that soldiers are potential murderers in 1992, demoted from major to first lieutenant. This decision was annulled by the military service Senate on Federal Administrative Court (Germany: Bundesverwaltungsgericht of last instance. Prieß was promoted to lieutenant colonel and ordered to pay a disciplinary fine of 500 marks.[2] Prieß was a member of the Social Democratic Party of Germany since 1972, a member of the ÖTV since 1974 and later of its successor organization ver.di. He was since 1979 a member of the municipal council of Swisttal and 15 years deputy mayor of the municipality. In 1983 he was co-founder and, with the exception of 1996-97 speaker of the “Darmstädter Signal”.
