    Released: July 14, 2023

Heat is the debut English extended play by South Korean girl group (G)I-dle. It was released by Cube Entertainment and 88rising on October 5, 2023. It consists of eight physical versions: Blaze, Flare, a group digipack, and five digipacks for each of the members. The EP contains five tracks, including the pre-released video track "I Do" and the lead single "I Want That".

Background and release

[edit]

On July 10, 2023, Billboard reported a partnership between (G)I-dle's parent company Cube Entertainment and American record label 88rising, where the group would release their first English single "I Do" as part of their debut English EP Heat.[1] On July 11, 88rising released a music video teaser for "I Do".[2] The song was then released digitally on July 13. While the EP was originally scheduled for release on September 7, it was delayed to October 5 to "ensure the best quality". [3] On October 2, Cube released the audio snippet for the five tracks.[4]

Conception

[edit]

In an interview with Billboard News, member Minnie mentioned that their debut EP in the U.S. is the group's way to "give back and be more connected to" their fans.[5]

"NME"[6]

NME's Rhian Daly gave Heat three out of five stars. As none of the members were involved in the production of the EP, a deviation from the group's usual role in self-producing their songs, she mentions how the EP "lack[ed] the spark that comes from (G)I-DLE’s own lyrical and musical input". While she acknowledged that the songs "are perfectly fine – some of them even fun", she concluded that "'Heat' still packs in some fun moments, even if it doesn’t add too much to the band’s story".[7]

Commercial performance

[edit]

On October 16, 2023, Heat debuted at number 25 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart with 22,000 units sold.[8] In the same weak, the EP debuted at number 2 on both the Top Album Sales and Top Current Album Sales.[9][10]
