Anime in the Classroom

As the next generation of anime continues to be released throughout the world such as My Hero Academia, Jujutsu Kaisen, and Chainsaw Man, the popularity of anime and the Japanese culture continues to grow with audiences that become introduced to the Japanese language through this media. Many fans are drawn to Japanese culture and seeing Japan one day for themselves, but they are also drawn to learning the language of Japanese to fully immerse themselves into the show to one day watch without subtitles. The popularity of anime with younger people throughout the world has developed into an increased interest in more students wanting to learn more about Japan and the Japanese language. Several studies have been conducted to gauge student interest in anime and how that interest affects their ability to learn and use the Japanese language. Educators are also finding that student interest in anime benefits them by increasing their ability to use and speak the language competently. Anime has also been found to be a useful tool for educators when teaching about the Japanese culture and history.

Anime has been used with students learning Japanese as a second language to help them improve their skills in listening and speaking Japanese. Educators can use dialogue scenes to help students learn the actual and everyday Japanese language. The students can then understand dialogues and real-life conversations from watching anime characters interact with one another. Anime is also more interesting and stimulating to the student which increases the amount they learn. The voice actors of anime all speak with standard Japanese pronunciations. This helps students learn pronunciations by imitating the characters they are watching. The students learn the actual and living Japanese language which makes it much more useable for them. Experiments to show the effectiveness of using anime in the Japanese language classroom have shown that the use of anime had positive results for the students.

Research of new learning techniques and teaching processes is a constant part of the field of education. Because of the huge growth and popularity of mass media educators are paying more attention to pop culture and ways to use it to improve student skills and to help students connect better. Studies have been done to show how the use of Anime in the classroom increases student interest in learning the Japanese language and how they use it in conversation. Because the popularity of Anime is a recent and fast-growing area there haven’t been any in-depth studies conducted on its use in the classroom.

The recently released animated movie Demon Slayer and related series have become one of the most popular examples of Anime worldwide. Due to the popularity of the movie and related series educators in the area of Japanese culture are going to use it in their classes. The creator of Demon Slayer uses uniforms, landscapes, traditional practices, and traditional folklore of the Japanese people. Demon Slayer is set in a period before WW II and the westernization of Japan. By using true representations of the Japanese life of the period the movie and series is a useful tool to teach students about several aspects of Japanese culture and history.
