PART 1 Abgeschnitten ist ein deutscher Thriller von Christian Alvart aus dem Jahr 2018. Der Film basiert auf dem gleichnamigen Roman, den Sebastian Fitzek mit dem Rechtsmediziner Michael Tsokos verfasste. In den Hauptrollen agieren neben Moritz Bleibtreu und Jasna Fritzi Bauer, Lars Eidinger und Fahri Yardim. Handlung Rund um Helgoland tobt gerade ein heftiger Sturm, sodass die Insel von der Außenwelt abgeschnitten ist. Die 24-jährige Comiczeichnerin Linda befindet sich vorübergehend auf der Insel. Sie wird von ihrem Ex-Freund Danny bedroht, der sie stalkt. Als sie wieder einmal glaubt, vor ihm fliehen zu müssen, und eine Böschung hinunterstürzt, stößt sie am Strand auf eine Leiche. Zur selben Zeit ist der für das Bundeskriminalamt tätige Rechtsmediziner Prof. Dr. Paul Herzfeld an der Charité in Berlin mit einer Obduktion beschäftigt. Im Kopf einer weiblichen Leiche, deren Kiefer fehlt, findet er eine Kapsel. Darin steckt ein kleiner Zettel, auf dem die Handynummer seiner 17-jährigen Tochter Hannah, die er nach der Trennung von der Mutter Hannahs nur selten sieht, notiert ist.	Cut Off (German: Abgeschnitten) is a 2018 German thriller film directed by Christian Alvart. It is based on the eponymous novel written by Sebastian Fitzek and Michael Tsokos, a medical examiner. The film stars Moritz Bleibtreu, Jasna Fritzi Bauer, Lars Eidinger, and Fahri Yardim. Plot A violent storm blusters around the island of Heligoland and cuts off the island from the rest of the world. Linda, a 24-year-old cartoonist, is temporarily staying on the island. She is threatened by her ex-boyfriend Danny, who is stalking her. Once again in a situation where she feels like she needs to flee from him, she falls down an embankment while fleeing and comes across a corpse on the beach. At the same time, Prof. Dr. Paul Herzfeld, a medical examiner working for the Federal Criminal Police Office, is engaged in an autopsy at the Charité University Hospital in Berlin. He finds a capsule in the head of a female corpse whose jaw is missing. PART 2 Er wählt die Nummer und muss zur Kenntnis nehmen, dass seine Tochter entführt worden ist und er auf weitere Informationen von einem Mann namens Erik warten soll. Herzfeld wird strikt angewiesen, keinesfalls die Polizei zu informieren, wenn er das Leben seiner Tochter nicht gefährden wolle. Etwas später klingelt das Handy des Toten auf Helgoland, als Linda gerade neben der Leiche steht. Sie nimmt das Gespräch an und spricht mit Herzfeld. Sie erklärt ihm, dass er wegen des Unwetters nicht nach Helgoland kommen könne. Daraufhin weist er sie an, Ender Müller, den mit ihm befreundeten Hausmeister der Inselklinik, zu suchen und die Leiche mit seiner Hilfe in den Obduktionsraum zu bringen. Zugleich macht er sich mit seinem neuen Praktikanten Ingolf von Appen, einem durch den Verkauf einer von ihm als 14-Jährigem entwickelten Internetplattform reich gewordenen, aber als Praktikant in der Rechtsmedizin eher unfähigen jungen Mann, in von Appens Auto auf den Weg in Richtung Cuxhaven. Mr. Herzfeld is advised not to call the police if he does not want to risk the life of his daughter. While Linda is standing next to the corpse, the mobile phone of the dead man found on Heligoland, rings. She answers the call and talks to Mr. Herzfeld. She explains that he cannot come to Heligoland because of the storm. He tells Linda to search for Ender Müller, who is a friend of his and the caretaker in the local hospital. The two of them should bring the corpse to the autopsy room. At the same time, Mr. Herzfeld and his new trainee Ingolf von Appen begin their journey to Cuxhaven in von Appen's car. The trainee became rich by selling his website which he had invented by the age of 14 but working in forensic medicine is not one of his strengths.	- He is told to wait for more information, which he will get (should sounds a bit weak) - advised not to call - Linda is standing next to the corpse (typo) --> I would actually change the structure of this sentence to something like "While Linda is standing next to the corpse, the mobile phone which belonged to the dead man... - She explains to him (maybe?) - He tells Linda to search - Ender Müller, a friend of his who is/and the caretaker... (that's just another option) - Obduktionsraum --> to the autopsy room. - Why did you use "Ingolf" in the English version when the German one uses his surname von Appen? (when talking about his car) - The last sentence lacks the link with the previous one like it has in the German version. I would probably have added a little touch like "Despite having become rich..., the young man is a quite incompetent medical examiner trainee."
PART 3 Während der Fahrt drängt er Linda telefonisch dazu, die Leiche vom Strand zu untersuchen. Linda, die Vegetarierin ist und sich ekelt, stimmt nur einer äußeren Leichenschau zu, die sie nach Herzfelds Anweisungen durchführt, während Ender mit Scherzen die Stimmung zu lockern versucht. Als sie jedoch im Hals des Toten einen gelben Gegenstand sieht und dessen Hals aufschneiden soll, wehrt sie sich gegen dieses Ansinnen. Erst nachdem sie mit Herzfeld über ihren Exfreund Danny gesprochen hat, entscheidet sie sich um. Der Gegenstand erweist sich als Einlage aus einem Überraschungsei. Darin steckt ein Foto. Es zeigt die im Ruhestand auf Helgoland lebende frühere Richterin Friederike Töven, die seinerzeit ein nach Meinung von Jens Marinek viel zu mildes Urteil gegen Sadler gefällt hatte. Marineks einzige noch minderjährige Tochter war von Sadler geschändet und zum Selbstmord getrieben worden. Herzfeld und Marinek waren zu diesem Zeitpunkt Kollegen und befreundet.	During the ride, he urges Linda over the telephone to examine the corpse she found on the beach. PART 4 Marinek hatte Herzfeld seinerzeit gedrängt, durch eine Falschaussage eine höhere Strafe für Sadler zu erreichen, was Herzfeld jedoch abgelehnt hatte. Linda und Ender dringen in Tövens Haus auf Helgoland ein und finden dort die Leiche der Frau, die sie ebenfalls in den Obduktionsraum bringen. Herzfeld und sein Praktikant haben währenddessen das abgelegen liegende Haus seines Kollegen Jens Marinek erreicht. Dort finden sie neben einem toten Schwein Hinweise auf den Sadisten Jan Erik Sadler, den Mann, der Hannah gefangen hält. Bei der Spurensuche bricht Ingolf in einem zugefrorenen See neben dem Haus ein, kann aber von Herzfeld gerettet werden. In der Klinik auf Helgoland will Ender die Stromversorgung sichern und kommt mit einem Messer in der Schulter zurück in den Obduktionsraum, in dem Linda sich eingeschlossen hat. In Tövens After steckt ein Holzstock. Herzfeld hat entsprechende Bilder in einem Video gesehen. Auf dem Stock stehen Zahlen, die Linda telefonisch übermittelt.	At the time, Marinek had urged Herzfeld to give a false testimony so that Sadler got a tougher punishment, though Herzfeld refused to. Linda and Ender break into Töven's house in Heligoland and find a woman's corpse there, which they also bring to the autopsy room. Meanwhile, Herzfeld and his intern have reached the secluded house of his colleague, Jens Marinek. There, next to a dead pig, they find evidence relating to the sadist Jan Erik Salder, the man who is holding Hannah captive. During the search for clues, Ingolf falls into a frozen lake near the house, though he is saved by Herzfeld. Ender wants to secure the electricity supply at the Heligoland clinic, and comes back to the autopsy room, in which Linda has locked herself, with a knife in his shoulder. A block of wood sticks out of Töven's rectum. Herzfeld has seen equivalent images in a video. PART 5 Es sind Geokoordinaten, die Herzfeld mit dem Praktikanten in einen Wald führen. Dort wird er von Marinek überwältigt. Dieser schluckt einen Speicherchip, bevor er sich erschießt. Herzfeld holt den Chip heraus und sieht in einem Video den Umzugsunternehmer Philipp Schwintowski. Nicht nur Marineks Tochter Lily, sondern auch Schwintowskis Tochter Rebecca wurden von Sadler entführt. Beide nahmen sich nach Schändung durch Sadler in ihrer Verzweiflung das Leben. Daraufhin entschieden sich die beiden Männer zur Selbstjustiz. Hannahs Entführung veranlassten sie, weil Herzfeld in ihren Augen als Teil des Rechtssystems mitverantwortlich für den Tod ihrer Töchter ist. Herzfeld verursacht absichtlich einen Autounfall im Wald, um über das automatische Notrufsystem des Autos einen Rettungshubschrauber zu alarmieren, den er dazu nutzt, um mit Ingolf nach Helgoland zu fliegen. Dort rettet Herzfeld Linda und Ender, nachdem diese von Sadler angegriffen wurden und Ender dabei schwer verletzt worden war. In dem Toten vom Strand erkennt er Schwintowski.	They are geo-coordinates which lead Herzfeld and his trainee into a forest. There, Herzfeld is overpowered by Marinek who shoots himself after swallowing a memory chip. Herzfeld gets it out and sees a video on it showing the moving contractor Philipp Schwintowski. Not only Marinek's daughter Lily but also Schwintowski's daughter Rebecca had been abducted by Sadler. In desperation, both of them had committed suicide after being raped by him. Marinek and Schwintowski decided to take justice into their own hands. They arranged for Hannah's abduction because in their eyes Herzfeld as part of the justice system was also responsible for the death of their daughters. In the forest, Herzfeld deliberately causes a car accident to alarm a rescue helicopter via the car's automatic emergency call system. The helicopter takes Ingolf and him to Helgoland. When he arrives, he saves Linda and Ender who had been attacked by Sadler which left Ender severely injured. PART 6 Eine Anspielung auf Alcatraz führt die Gruppe zu einem Bunkersystem unter dem Leuchtturm von Helgoland, das die Nazis einst anlegten. Dort findet Herzfeld Hannah und befreit sie. Sadler kann sich verstecken und entkommt unerkannt. Der Rechtsmediziner dankt Linda und Ingolf für ihre Hilfe, bevor er mit Hannah und den Leichen im Hubschrauber zurückfliegt. Als der Hubschrauber gerade mitten über der Nordsee ist, sticht ein Messer durch einen Leichensack. Sadler greift die Gruppe an, bevor Herzfeld ihn aus dem Hubschrauber stößt und seine Finger, die sich am Laufwerk des Hubschraubers festkrallen, nach kurzem Zögern mit einem Messer durchtrennt. Produktion Produktionsnotizen Abgeschnitten ist die dritte Verfilmung eines Fitzek-Romans nach Das Kind und Das Joshua-Profil. Viele Szenen des Films wurden am Originalschauplatz auf Helgoland gedreht. Mitarbeiter der Paracelsus-Nordseeklinik traten als Komparsen auf. Andere Szenen entstanden in Berlin, unter anderem in einem verlassenen Fabrikgebäude im Stadtteil Schöneweide und im Hörsaal des Universitätsklinikums Benjamin Franklin.	The reference to Alcatraz leads the group to a bunker system under the Lighthouse of Heligoland, that the Nazis once built. There, Herzfeld finds Hannah and rescues her. Sadler is able to hide and escape unnoticed. Before he flies back in a helicopter with Hannah and the corpses, the forensic doctor thanks Linda and Ingolf for their assistance. As the helicopter is flying over the North Sea, a knife cuts through one of the body bags. Sadler attacks the group before Herzfeld manages to push him out of the helicopter. Sadler is clinging on to the helicopter with his fingers whcih herzfeld, after briefly hesitating, cuts off with a knife. Production Production notes Cut Off is the third film adaptation of a novel written by Sebastian Fitzek. The first two were “Das Kind” and “Das Joshua-Profil”. Many of the scenes in the film were shot at the original location on Heligoland. Employees of the Paracelsus North Sea Clinic appeared as extras. Other scenes were shot in Berlin, for instance in an abandoned factory building in the Schöneweide district and in an auditorium of the Benjamin Franklin University Hospital.	- ...and the corpses, the forensic doctor ... - In the last sentence of the plot, it seems slightly confusing who is referred to in your prepositions. (maybe: ...cuts Sadler's fingers... to show who is meant) - ...with which he is clinging to the helicopter... →I would change the verb to get closer to the meaning of "sich festkrallen" which was used in the original text. - maybe I would change the last sentence though to not have the preposition "off" separated from the verb: ...out of the helicopter. Sadler is clinging on to the helicopter with his fingers which Herzfeld, after briefly hesitating, cuts off with a knife. - I wasn't sure about how to translate "Komparsen". Apparently, there is a difference between a supernumerary ("Statist") and a bit player ("Komparse"). So, I would change that to bit players.
PART 7 Michael Tsokos war als Berater dabei und einige seiner echten Kollegen wirkten im Film mit. Einen Pressetermin zur Vorstellung des Films gab es an Tsokos’ Arbeitsplatz in der Charité. Der Rechtsmediziner beschrieb die Darstellung der Obduktion im Film als realistisch. Dass auch ein Laie eine Obduktion unter Anleitung eines Experten vornehmen könne, hält er für möglich: „Das könnte auch jeder andere Nicht-Experte unter meiner Anleitung schaffen.“ Der Regisseur Christian Alvart beschrieb den Film als „Sektionsthriller“. Für ihn war es wichtig, den Zuschauer langsam an die Bilder der Obduktionen heranzuführen: „Das war natürlich extrem schwierig für ein visuelles Medium zu finden, was macht man, wie viel zeigt man, was ist nicht nur zumutbar, sondern wie gewöhnt man auch die Zuschauer, wie führt man in die Welt ein.“ Tsokos und Fitzek haben Cameo-Auftritte als Professor bei einer Vorlesung und als Anwalt des Rechtsmediziners. Tsokos Tochter Linnea spielt die fünfjährige Rebecca.	Micheal Toskos particapated as an advisor and many of his real colleguaes were part of the movie. A pressmeeting for the movie took place at Tosko's workplace at the Berlin Charite. The forensic doctor described the showcase of the autopsy as realistic. He thinks it is possbile that laypeople could do an autopsy under his instructions: "Any non-expert could do this under my instructions" The director Christian Alvart described the movie as "dissectionthriller". It was important for him to slowly introduce the audience to the pictures of the autopsy: "It was definetely extremly difficult to find a suitable visual media, what do you do, how much can be shown, what is not reasonable, but gets the audience used to the pictures shown, how do you introduce that world to them." Toskos and Fritzek have both cameo appearances as professor in a lecture and as laywer of the forensic doctor. Toskos daughter Linnea plays thee 5 year old rebecca. PART 8	Christopher Kohn ist die Stimme von Danny, Daniela Wüstner die von Petra Herzfeld. Veröffentlichung In Deutschland wurde der Film am 11. Oktober 2018 veröffentlicht, in Russland am 14. März 2019. Am 16. März 2019 lief er beim Cinequest Film Festival und am 5. April 2019 beim Cleveland International Film Festival in den USA. In Belgien wurde er am 20. April 2019 beim BIFF vorgestellt, im Vereinigten Königreich am 23. August 2019 beim FrightFest und in Frankreich am 7. September 2019 beim L’Étrange Festival. Der internationale Titel des Films lautet Cut Off. Rezeption Kritik Christoph Petersen beschreibt den Film bei Filmstarts.de als „großbebildertes und temporeiches Genrekino der düstereren Sorte. [Alvart] ist tatsächlich eine dem Geist der Vorlage absolut entsprechende Verfilmung gelungen – mit allen Vor- und Nachteilen, die die oft erprobte Fitzek-Masche eben so mit sich bringt.“[10] Er lobt die Hauptdarsteller Bleibtreu und Bauer, meint aber, dass die Verfilmung hauptsächlich Fitzek-Fans gefalle.Rezeption Kritik	Christopher Kohn is the voice actor for Danny, Daniela Wüstner of Petra Herzfeld. Publication The movie was released on the 11th of October 2018 in Germany and on the 14th of March 2019 to a Russian audience. Abgeschnitten went on to be screened to an audience in the United States at the Cinequest Film Festival in San Jose, California on the 16th of March 2019 as well as at the Cleveland International Film Festival on the 5th of April 2019. Large parts of the European public were introduced to the movie at the BIFF Film Festival in Belgium on the 20th of April 2019 ,the FrightFest in the UK on the 23rd of August 2019 b and at the L'Etrange Festival in France on the 7th of September 2019. While the german title of the Movie is "Abgeschnitten", the international title is "Cut Off". Critical Reception "Cut Off" has often received critical acclaim following its screening to an international audience. Randy Myers of the San Jose Mercury News writes: ""Cut Off" is the equivalent of an absorbing if preposterous cinematic page-turner; you simply can't stop watching"	Honestly I think thats totally fine like that
PART 9 Er lobt die Hauptdarsteller Bleibtreu und Bauer, meint aber, dass die Verfilmung hauptsächlich Fitzek-Fans gefalle. Kaspar Heinrich befindet bei Zeit Online: „Die überfrachtete Story ist der Vorwand für eine mehr als zweistündige Gewalt- und Obduktionsorgie. […] Man muss wirklich recht hartgesotten sein, um Abgeschnitten zu ertragen.“ Heinrich spricht von einer „hanebüchenen Geschichte“ und sieht den Film im Zusammenhang mit dem „generell miesen Ruf deutscher Thriller“. Antje Wessels beschreibt die Geschichte bei Quotenmeter.de als hanebüchen, aber spannend und geht auf die Struktur ein: „Das Publikum ist der Hauptfigur dadurch immer ein paar Schritte voraus […]. Diese besondere Erzählform, unter die sich mit der Zeit auch noch eine Art ‚Schnitzeljagd-Struktur‘ mischt […], wird um die Idee ergänzt, die eigentliche Hauptfigur schnell zur Nebenfigur zu degradieren.“	He praises the leading actors Bleibtreu and Bauer. He thinks, however, that fans of Fitzek like the film best. Kaspar Heinrich’s statement on Zeit online, a German newspaper, says: “the overloaded story is the pretext for this orgy of violence and autopsy [...] to last more than two hours. You really have to be hard-boiled to bear Cut off”. Heinrich speaks of an “outrageous story” and sees the film in the context of a generally bad reputation of German thrillers.            On Quotemeter.de, a German online TV magazine,  Antje Wessels describes the story as outrageous but exciting and analyses the structure of the film: “through this construction, the audience is always a few steps ahead of the main character [...]. This special narrative form, which is gradually mixed with a kind of scavenge hunt structure [...] as well, is supplemented by the idea of degrading the real main character to a minor role in a rash way”.	I would argue for using international reviews, since the release "Cut Off" is basically a different movie. Hence, the german reviews for "Abgeschnitten" are only relevant to english-speaking users to a certain extent. On Zeit Online At "Quotemeter.de" doesn't work too well
PART 10 Philipp Schwarz von Spiegel Online sieht in dem Film einen „seltsam blutleere[n] Thriller. [… Im] Widerspruch zwischen dem romanhaften Prinzip der eskalierenden Theoriebildung und dem filmischen Prinzip der sinnlichen Intensität wird Alvarts Film zunehmend aufgerieben.“ Der Kritiker Rüdiger Suchsland bewertete den Film für arteschock und meinte, „handwerklich“ stimme auch „vieles in diesem Film“. Die Geschichte sei allerdings „überaus kompliziert, und das unnötig“. Weiter schrieb Suchsland: „Alles, wirklich alles wird hier verbraten, was auch an der Vorlage liegt: Eine typisch postmoderne Story, der es nie um Wirklichkeitsdarstellung geht. Zugleich verbindet der Film sehr realistische Szenen, wie die unverblümte Vorführung einer besonders brutalen Vergewaltigung, mit Momenten, die klamaukig wirken sollen.“ Abgeschnitten habe seinen „speziellen Reiz“ und sei „ein Thriller, der mit Ekelhorror arbeitet“. Von „dieser Sorte Film“ gebe es „nicht viel im deutschen Kino“.	Phillip Schwarz, who works for the "Spiegel Online" magazine (a German nespaper), called the movie a "weirdly bloodless thriller. Contrary to the novel principle of escalating production of theory and to the cinematic principle of sensual intensity, Alvarts' film becomes increasingly worn out. The critic Rüdier Suchsland rated the movie for artechock and said that from a perspective of craft, much was done right. He also said that he story was very complicated, which is unnecessary. Suchsland then wrote that pretty much everything was blown, which is partly due to the template: A typical postmodern story which never aimed to depict reality. At the same time, the movie conects scenes which are very realistic, like the blunt presentation of an extremely brutal rape, with scenes which seem to be meant to be in a slapstick way. The critic continues his assesment saying that "Cut Off" had its special appeal and that it would be a thriller working with disgusting humor. There haven't been many films of this sort in German cinemas.	I would suggest to add a comment on Spiegel online like “a German newspaper” to explain the English audience the origin of this source. The same is true for arteschocke, which might be unknown to the English audience. I would translate “allerdings” (second paragraph) with however, which is omitted in the translation. ...of an extremely brutal rape “funny”  for “klamaukig” seems to me a bit strange in this context. My dictionary offers “with a lot of commotion” or “in a slapstick way”. “would”   (not woul)
PART 11 Gelobt wurden Moritz Bleibtreu, Jasna Fritzi Bauer, Lars Eidinger und Fahri Yardim, mit denen „hervorragende Darsteller gewonnen“ worden seien. Oliver Kube schrieb in der Bild, dass Horror aus Deutschland „gern schief“ gehe. Abgeschnitten sei ein „knallharter Thriller“. Regisseur Alvart schaffe eine „extrem düstere, intensive Atmosphäre, wie sie sonst nur in Hollywood-Filmen wie ‚Sieben‘ zu erleben“ sei. Neben dem „Star-Ensemble“ sei es „vor allem die herbstnebelige Stimmung“, die den Thriller auszeichne. Fazit: „Eine komplexe Story voller aberwitziger Wendungen plus eine Atmosphäre wie im Big-Budget-Thriller aus Hollywood: Diese top besetzte Bestseller-Verfilmung hinterlässt den Zuschauer atemlos und vor Anspannung bebend.“ Auszeichnungen (Auswahl) Die Deutsche Film- und Medienbewertung FBW in Wiesbaden verlieh dem Film das Prädikat „wertvoll“. This top casted adaption of a bestseller leaves the viewers speechless and lets them shake from excitement.” Awards (Selection) The movie was awarded the predicate “valuable” by the academy of German movie and Media valuation (FBW) in Wiesbaden. What about: It was said that with (names) great actors were casted. It is not clear if the conclusion continues to be in indirect speech or the authors opinion.

Abgeschnitten ist ein deutscher Thriller von Christian Alvart aus dem Jahr 2018. Der Film basiert auf dem gleichnamigen Roman, den Sebastian Fitzek mit dem Rechtsmediziner Michael Tsokos verfasste. In den Hauptrollen agieren neben Moritz Bleibtreu und Jasna Fritzi Bauer, Lars Eidinger und Fahri Yardim.

Handlung

Rund um Helgoland tobt gerade ein heftiger Sturm, sodass die Insel von der Außenwelt abgeschnitten ist. Die 24-jährige Comiczeichnerin Linda befindet sich vorübergehend auf der Insel. Sie wird von ihrem Ex-Freund Danny bedroht, der sie stalkt. Als sie wieder einmal glaubt, vor ihm fliehen zu müssen, und eine Böschung hinunterstürzt, stößt sie am Strand auf eine Leiche.

Zur selben Zeit ist der für das Bundeskriminalamt tätige Rechtsmediziner Prof. Dr. Paul Herzfeld an der Charité in Berlin mit einer Obduktion beschäftigt. Im Kopf einer weiblichen Leiche, deren Kiefer fehlt, findet er eine Kapsel. Darin steckt ein kleiner Zettel, auf dem die Handynummer seiner 17-jährigen Tochter Hannah, die er nach der Trennung von der Mutter Hannahs nur selten sieht, notiert ist. END PART 1 Er wählt die Nummer und muss zur Kenntnis nehmen, dass seine Tochter entführt worden ist und er auf weitere Informationen von einem Mann namens Erik warten soll. Herzfeld wird strikt angewiesen, keinesfalls die Polizei zu informieren, wenn er das Leben seiner Tochter nicht gefährden wolle.

Etwas später klingelt das Handy des Toten auf Helgoland, als Linda gerade neben der Leiche steht. Sie nimmt das Gespräch an und spricht mit Herzfeld. Sie erklärt ihm, dass er wegen des Unwetters nicht nach Helgoland kommen könne. Daraufhin weist er sie an, Ender Müller, den mit ihm befreundeten Hausmeister der Inselklinik, zu suchen und die Leiche mit seiner Hilfe in den Obduktionsraum zu bringen. Zugleich macht er sich mit seinem neuen Praktikanten Ingolf von Appen, einem durch den Verkauf einer von ihm als 14-Jährigem entwickelten Internetplattform reich gewordenen, aber als Praktikant in der Rechtsmedizin eher unfähigen jungen Mann, in von Appens Auto auf den Weg in Richtung Cuxhaven. END PART 2 Während der Fahrt drängt er Linda telefonisch dazu, die Leiche vom Strand zu untersuchen.

Linda, die Vegetarierin ist und sich ekelt, stimmt nur einer äußeren Leichenschau zu, die sie nach Herzfelds Anweisungen durchführt, während Ender mit Scherzen die Stimmung zu lockern versucht. Als sie jedoch im Hals des Toten einen gelben Gegenstand sieht und dessen Hals aufschneiden soll, wehrt sie sich gegen dieses Ansinnen. Erst nachdem sie mit Herzfeld über ihren Exfreund Danny gesprochen hat, entscheidet sie sich um. Der Gegenstand erweist sich als Einlage aus einem Überraschungsei. Darin steckt ein Foto. Es zeigt die im Ruhestand auf Helgoland lebende frühere Richterin Friederike Töven, die seinerzeit ein nach Meinung von Jens Marinek viel zu mildes Urteil gegen Sadler gefällt hatte. Marineks einzige noch minderjährige Tochter war von Sadler geschändet und zum Selbstmord getrieben worden. Herzfeld und Marinek waren zu diesem Zeitpunkt Kollegen und befreundet. END PART 3 Marinek hatte Herzfeld seinerzeit gedrängt, durch eine Falschaussage eine höhere Strafe für Sadler zu erreichen, was Herzfeld jedoch abgelehnt hatte.

Linda und Ender dringen in Tövens Haus auf Helgoland ein und finden dort die Leiche der Frau, die sie ebenfalls in den Obduktionsraum bringen. Herzfeld und sein Praktikant haben währenddessen das abgelegen liegende Haus seines Kollegen Jens Marinek erreicht. Dort finden sie neben einem toten Schwein Hinweise auf den Sadisten Jan Erik Sadler, den Mann, der Hannah gefangen hält. Bei der Spurensuche bricht Ingolf in einem zugefrorenen See neben dem Haus ein, kann aber von Herzfeld gerettet werden.

In der Klinik auf Helgoland will Ender die Stromversorgung sichern und kommt mit einem Messer in der Schulter zurück in den Obduktionsraum, in dem Linda sich eingeschlossen hat. In Tövens After steckt ein Holzstock. Herzfeld hat entsprechende Bilder in einem Video gesehen. Auf dem Stock stehen Zahlen, die Linda telefonisch übermittelt. END PART 4 Es sind Geokoordinaten, die Herzfeld mit dem Praktikanten in einen Wald führen. Dort wird er von Marinek überwältigt. Dieser schluckt einen Speicherchip, bevor er sich erschießt. Herzfeld holt den Chip heraus und sieht in einem Video den Umzugsunternehmer Philipp Schwintowski.

Nicht nur Marineks Tochter Lily, sondern auch Schwintowskis Tochter Rebecca wurden von Sadler entführt. Beide nahmen sich nach Schändung durch Sadler in ihrer Verzweiflung das Leben. Daraufhin entschieden sich die beiden Männer zur Selbstjustiz. Hannahs Entführung veranlassten sie, weil Herzfeld in ihren Augen als Teil des Rechtssystems mitverantwortlich für den Tod ihrer Töchter ist.

Herzfeld verursacht absichtlich einen Autounfall im Wald, um über das automatische Notrufsystem des Autos einen Rettungshubschrauber zu alarmieren, den er dazu nutzt, um mit Ingolf nach Helgoland zu fliegen. Dort rettet Herzfeld Linda und Ender, nachdem diese von Sadler angegriffen wurden und Ender dabei schwer verletzt worden war. In dem Toten vom Strand erkennt er Schwintowski. END PART 5 Eine Anspielung auf Alcatraz führt die Gruppe zu einem Bunkersystem unter dem Leuchtturm von Helgoland, das die Nazis einst anlegten. Dort findet Herzfeld Hannah und befreit sie. Sadler kann sich verstecken und entkommt unerkannt.

Der Rechtsmediziner dankt Linda und Ingolf für ihre Hilfe, bevor er mit Hannah und den Leichen im Hubschrauber zurückfliegt. Als der Hubschrauber gerade mitten über der Nordsee ist, sticht ein Messer durch einen Leichensack. Sadler greift die Gruppe an, bevor Herzfeld ihn aus dem Hubschrauber stößt und seine Finger, die sich am Laufwerk des Hubschraubers festkrallen, nach kurzem Zögern mit einem Messer durchtrennt.

Produktion Produktionsnotizen

Abgeschnitten ist die dritte Verfilmung eines Fitzek-Romans nach Das Kind und Das Joshua-Profil. Viele Szenen des Films wurden am Originalschauplatz auf Helgoland gedreht. Mitarbeiter der Paracelsus-Nordseeklinik traten als Komparsen auf. Andere Szenen entstanden in Berlin, unter anderem in einem verlassenen Fabrikgebäude im Stadtteil Schöneweide und im Hörsaal des Universitätsklinikums Benjamin Franklin. END PART 6

Michael Tsokos war als Berater dabei und einige seiner echten Kollegen wirkten im Film mit. Einen Pressetermin zur Vorstellung des Films gab es an Tsokos’ Arbeitsplatz in der Charité. Der Rechtsmediziner beschrieb die Darstellung der Obduktion im Film als realistisch. Dass auch ein Laie eine Obduktion unter Anleitung eines Experten vornehmen könne, hält er für möglich: „Das könnte auch jeder andere Nicht-Experte unter meiner Anleitung schaffen.“ Der Regisseur Christian Alvart beschrieb den Film als „Sektionsthriller“. Für ihn war es wichtig, den Zuschauer langsam an die Bilder der Obduktionen heranzuführen: „Das war natürlich extrem schwierig für ein visuelles Medium zu finden, was macht man, wie viel zeigt man, was ist nicht nur zumutbar, sondern wie gewöhnt man auch die Zuschauer, wie führt man in die Welt ein.“

Tsokos und Fitzek haben Cameo-Auftritte als Professor bei einer Vorlesung und als Anwalt des Rechtsmediziners. Tsokos Tochter Linnea spielt die fünfjährige Rebecca. END PART 7 Christopher Kohn ist die Stimme von Danny, Daniela Wüstner die von Petra Herzfeld.

Veröffentlichung

In Deutschland wurde der Film am 11. Oktober 2018 veröffentlicht, in Russland am 14. März 2019. Am 16. März 2019 lief er beim Cinequest Film Festival und am 5. April 2019 beim Cleveland International Film Festival in den USA. In Belgien wurde er am 20. April 2019 beim BIFF vorgestellt, im Vereinigten Königreich am 23. August 2019 beim FrightFest und in Frankreich am 7. September 2019 beim L’Étrange Festival. Der internationale Titel des Films lautet Cut Off.

Rezeption Kritik

Christoph Petersen beschreibt den Film bei Filmstarts.de als „großbebildertes und temporeiches Genrekino der düstereren Sorte. [Alvart] ist tatsächlich eine dem Geist der Vorlage absolut entsprechende Verfilmung gelungen – mit allen Vor- und Nachteilen, die die oft erprobte Fitzek-Masche eben so mit sich bringt.“END PART 8 Er lobt die Hauptdarsteller Bleibtreu und Bauer, meint aber, dass die Verfilmung hauptsächlich Fitzek-Fans gefalle.

Kaspar Heinrich befindet bei Zeit Online: „Die überfrachtete Story ist der Vorwand für eine mehr als zweistündige Gewalt- und Obduktionsorgie. […] Man muss wirklich recht hartgesotten sein, um Abgeschnitten zu ertragen.“ Heinrich spricht von einer „hanebüchenen Geschichte“ und sieht den Film im Zusammenhang mit dem „generell miesen Ruf deutscher Thriller“.

Antje Wessels beschreibt die Geschichte bei Quotenmeter.de als hanebüchen, aber spannend und geht auf die Struktur ein: „Das Publikum ist der Hauptfigur dadurch immer ein paar Schritte voraus […]. Diese besondere Erzählform, unter die sich mit der Zeit auch noch eine Art ‚Schnitzeljagd-Struktur‘ mischt […], wird um die Idee ergänzt, die eigentliche Hauptfigur schnell zur Nebenfigur zu degradieren.“END PART 9

Philipp Schwarz von Spiegel Online sieht in dem Film einen „seltsam blutleere[n] Thriller. [… Im] Widerspruch zwischen dem romanhaften Prinzip der eskalierenden Theoriebildung und dem filmischen Prinzip der sinnlichen Intensität wird Alvarts Film zunehmend aufgerieben.“

Der Kritiker Rüdiger Suchsland bewertete den Film für arteschock und meinte, „handwerklich“ stimme auch „vieles in diesem Film“. Die Geschichte sei allerdings „überaus kompliziert, und das unnötig“. Weiter schrieb Suchsland: „Alles, wirklich alles wird hier verbraten, was auch an der Vorlage liegt: Eine typisch postmoderne Story, der es nie um Wirklichkeitsdarstellung geht. Zugleich verbindet der Film sehr realistische Szenen, wie die unverblümte Vorführung einer besonders brutalen Vergewaltigung, mit Momenten, die klamaukig wirken sollen.“ Abgeschnitten habe seinen „speziellen Reiz“ und sei „ein Thriller, der mit Ekelhorror arbeitet“. Von „dieser Sorte Film“ gebe es „nicht viel im deutschen Kino“. END PART 10 Gelobt wurden Moritz Bleibtreu, Jasna Fritzi Bauer, Lars Eidinger und Fahri Yardim, mit denen „hervorragende Darsteller gewonnen“ worden seien.

Oliver Kube schrieb in der Bild, dass Horror aus Deutschland „gern schief“ gehe. Abgeschnitten sei ein „knallharter Thriller“. Regisseur Alvart schaffe eine „extrem düstere, intensive Atmosphäre, wie sie sonst nur in Hollywood-Filmen wie ‚Sieben‘ zu erleben“ sei. Neben dem „Star-Ensemble“ sei es „vor allem die herbstnebelige Stimmung“, die den Thriller auszeichne. Fazit: „Eine komplexe Story voller aberwitziger Wendungen plus eine Atmosphäre wie im Big-Budget-Thriller aus Hollywood: Diese top besetzte Bestseller-Verfilmung hinterlässt den Zuschauer atemlos und vor Anspannung bebend.“

Cut Off (film)

Cut Off (German: Abgeschnitten) is a 2018 German thriller film directed by Christian Alvart. It is based on the eponymous novel written by Sebastian Fitzek and Michael Tsokos, a medical examiner. The film stars Moritz Bleibtreu, Jasna Fritzi Bauer, Lars Eidinger, and Fahri Yardim.

Plot

A violent storm blusters around the island of Heligoland and cuts off the island from the rest of the world. Linda, a 24-year-old cartoonist, is temporarily staying on the island. She is threatened by her ex-boyfriend Danny, who is stalking her. Once again in a situation where she feels like she needs to flee from him, she falls down an embankment while fleeing and comes across a corpse on the beach.

At the same time, Prof. Dr. Paul Herzfeld, a medical examiner working for the Federal Criminal Police Office, is engaged in an autopsy at the Charité University Hospital in Berlin. He finds a capsule in the head of a female corpse whose jaw is missing. The capsule contains a small slip of paper with the cell phone number of his 17-year-old daughter Hannah, whom he rarely sees since separating from her mother. He calls the number and has to find out that his daughter has been kidnapped. He is told to wait for more information which he will get from a man called Erik. Mr. Herzfeld is advised not to call the police if he does not want to risk the life of his daughter.

While Linda is standing next to the corpse, the mobile phone of the dead man found on Heligoland, rings. She answers the call and talks to Mr. Herzfeld. She explains that he cannot come to Heligoland because of the storm. He tells Linda to search for Ender Müller, who is a friend of his and the caretaker in the local hospital. The two of them should bring the corpse to the autopsy room. At the same time, Mr. Herzfeld and his new trainee Ingolf von Appen begin their journey to Cuxhaven in von Appen's car. The trainee became rich by selling his website which he had invented by the age of 14 but working in forensic medicine is not one of his strengths. During the ride, he urges Linda on the phone to examine the corpse she found on the beach.

Linda, who is disgusted and a vegetarian, only approves of an external necropsy, which she performs following Herzfeld’s instructions, while Ender tries to lighten the mood with jokes. However, when she finds a yellow object in the corpse’s throat and is asked to cut the throat open, she resists the request. Only after talking to Herzfeld about her ex-boyfriend Danny, she changes her mind. The object turns out to be the plastic capsule of a Kinder Surprise and contains a photograph depicting the retired judge Friedericke Töven who lives on Heligoland. According to Jens Marinek, she once passed a too lenient sentence on Sadler, who had raped Marinek's only daughter who was underaged and later committed suicide because of Sadler. Herzfeld and Marinek were colleagues and friends at that time. At the time, Marinek had urged Herzfeld to give a false testimony so that Sadler got a tougher punishment, though Herzfeld refused to.

Linda and Ender break into Töven's house in Heligoland and find a woman's corpse there, which they also bring to the autopsy room. Meanwhile, Herzfeld and his intern have reached the secluded house of his colleague, Jens Marinek. There, next to a dead pig, they find evidence relating to the sadist Jan Erik Salder, the man who is holding Hannah captive. During the search for clues, Ingolf falls into a frozen lake near the house, though he is saved by Herzfeld.

Ender wants to secure the electricity supply at the Heligoland clinic, and comes back to the autopsy room, in which Linda has locked herself, with a knife in his shoulder. A block of wood sticks out of Töven's rectum. Herzfeld has seen equivalent images in a video. There are numbers on the wooden block, which Linda forwards on via her phone. They are geo-coordinates which lead Herzfeld and his trainee into a forest. There, Herzfeld is overpowered by Marinek, who shoots himself after swallowing a memory chip. Herzfeld gets it out and sees a video on it showing the boss of a moving company Philipp Schwintowski.

Not only Marinek's daughter Lily but also Schwintowski's daughter Rebecca had been abducted by Sadler. In desperation, both of them had committed suicide after being raped by him. Marinek and Schwintowski decided to take justice into their own hands. They arranged for Hannah's abduction because in their eyes Herzfeld, as part of the justice system, was also responsible for the death of their daughters.

In the forest, Herzfeld deliberately causes a car accident to alarm a rescue helicopter via the car's automatic emergency call system. The helicopter takes Ingolf and him to Heligoland. When he arrives, he saves Linda and Ender, who had been attacked by Sadler, which left Ender severely injured. Herzfeld recognizes that the dead person found on the beach was Schwintowski. The reference to Alcatraz leads the group to a bunker system under the Lighthouse of Heligoland, that the Nazis once built. There, Herzfeld finds Hannah and rescues her. Sadler is able to hide and escape unnoticed.

Before he flies back in a helicopter with Hannah and the corpses, the forensic doctor thanks Linda and Ingolf for their assistance. As the helicopter is flying over the North Sea, a knife cuts through one of the body bags. Sadler attacks the group before Herzfeld manages to push him out of the helicopter. Sadler is clinging on to the helicopter with his fingers whcih herzfeld, after briefly hesitating, cuts off with a knife.

Production notes

Cut Off is the third film adaptation of a novel written by Sebastian Fitzek. The first two were “Das Kind” and “Das Joshua-Profil”. Many of the scenes in the film were shot at the original location on Heligoland. Employees of the Paracelsus North Sea Clinic appeared as extras. Other scenes were shot in Berlin, for instance in an abandoned factory building in the Schöneweide district and in an auditorium of the Benjamin Franklin University Hospital.

Micheal Toskos particapated as an advisor and many of his real colleguaes were part of the movie. A pressmeeting for the movie took place at Tosko's workplace at the Berlin Charité. The forensic doctor described the showcase of the autopsy as realistic. He thinks it is possbile that laypeople could do an autopsy under his instructions: "Any non-expert could do this under my instructions". The director Christian Alvart described the movie as "dissectionthriller". It was important for him to slowly introduce the audience to the pictures of the autopsy: "It was definetely extremly difficult to find a suitable visual media, what do you do, how much can be shown, what is not reasonable, but gets the audience used to the pictures shown, how do you introduce that world to them."

Toskos and Fritzek have both cameo appearances as professor in a lecture and as laywer of the forensic doctor. Toskos daughter Linnea plays thee 5 year old rebecca. Christopher Kohn is the voice actor for Danny, Daniela Wüstner of Petra Herzfeld.

Publication

The movie was released on the 11th of October 2018 in Germany and on the 14th of March 2019 to a Russian audience. Abgeschnitten went on to be screened to an audience in the United States at the Cinequest Film & Creativity Festival in San Jose, California on the 16th of March 2019 as well as at the Cleveland International Film Festival on the 5th of April 2019. Large parts of the European public were introduced to the movie at the Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival in Belgium in 2019, the London FrightFest Film Festival on the 23rd of August 2019 and at the L'Etrange Festival in France on the 7th of September 2019. While the German title of the Movie is "Abgeschnitten", the international title is "Cut Off".

Critical Reception

"Cut Off" has often received critical acclaim following its screening to an international audience. Randy Myers of the San Jose Mercury News writes: ""Cut Off" is the equivalent of an absorbing if preposterous cinematic page-turner; you simply can't stop watching".

Kaspar Heinrich of Zeit online, a German newspaper, says: “the overloaded story is the pretext for this orgy of violence and autopsy [...] to last more than two hours. You really have to be hard-boiled to bear Cut off”. Heinrich speaks of an “outrageous story” and sees the film in the context of a generally bad reputation of German thrillers.

Phillip Schwarz, who works for the “Spiegel Online” magazine (a German newspaper), called the movie a "weirdly bloodless thriller. Contrary to the novel principle of escalating production of theory and to the cinematic principle of sensual intensity, Alvarts' film becomes increasingly worn out.

The critic Rüdiger Suchsland rated the movie for artechock and said that from a perspective of craft, much was done right. He also said that he story was very complicated, which is unnecessary. Suchsland then wrote that pretty much everything was blown, which is partly due to the template: A typical postmodern story which never aimed to depict reality. At the same time, the movie conects scenes which are very realistic, like the blunt presentation of an extremely brutal rape, with scenes which seem to be meant to be in a slapstick way. The critic continues his assesment saying that "Cut Off" had its special appeal and that it would be a thriller working with disgusting humor.
