[edit]Das Festival wurde 1983 von Alexander Heisler als Fortführung der in den 1970er Jahren begründeten Veranstaltungsreihe Klassik & Jazz an der Universität Freiburg im Breisgau zusammen mit Uli Homann und Oberbürgermeister Rolf Böhme ins Leben gerufen.[2] Das erste Festival 1983 fand auf dem (Alten) Meßplatz (Gastronomie- und Zirkuszelt) und vor dem Kollegiengebäude II der Universität, auf dem heutigen Platz der Alten Synagoge(Spiegelzelt) statt. 1984 wurden die drei Zelte im Eschholzpark beim Technischen Rathaus aufgestellt. Seit 1985 werden die Zelte außerhalb der Innenstadt aufgebaut, in ein Naherholungsgebiet nahe dem Tiergehege Mundenhof. Wegen des fehlenden Parkplatzes wurde zusammen mit der Freiburger Verkehrs AG das Kombiticket entwickelt. Die Eintrittskarte ist dabei gleichzeitig der Fahrschein. Das ZMF müsste damit einer der Vorreiter für den Umweltschutz bei Veranstaltungen sein.
In den 1990er Jahren kämpften die Veranstalter mit großen finanziellen Problemen. Der Trägerverein und Veranstalter des ZMF musste am 22. September 2006 – im Jahr der Fußballweltmeisterschaft im eigenen Land – unter anderem wegen zu geringer Kartenverkäufe den vorläufigen Insolvenzantrag stellen. Seit 2007 wird das ZMF von der Zelt-Musik-Festival GmbH, die zusammen mit ZMF-Gründer Alexander Heisler, Andreas Schnitzler, Dieter Pfaff und Alexander Hanusch gegründet wurde, und an der die KOKO & DTK Entertainment GmbH zu einem Drittel beteiligt ist. Die Geschäftsführung im ersten Jahr übernahmen Alexander Hanusch und Marc Oßwald. In den Jahren 2012 bis 2014 stabilisierten sich die Besucherzahlen. Seit dem Jahr 2017 ist die Vaddi Concerts GmbH unter Geschäftsführer Marc Oßwald in Zusammenarbeit mit der Zelt-Musik-Festival GmbH für die Durchführung des Zelt-Musik-Festival Freiburg betraut.[3]

[edit]Alexander Heisler, Uli Homann and Rolf Böhme (the mayor of Freiburg at the time) originated the festival in 1983 as a continuation of “Klassik & Jazz” (Classic & Jazz), a series of events that were organized in the 1970s at the University of Freiburg. The first festival (1983) took place on the (Old) Trade Fair Square in Freiburg (with the catering and circus tents) and right in front of the collegiate building II of the University of Freiburg, nowadays the Old Synagogue Square (with a Spiegeltent). For the festival in 1984, the three tents were placed in the Eschholzpark near the Technical City Hall . Since 1985, the tents are set up outside of the city centre in a local recreation area near the zoo Mundenhof. Due to a lack of parking space, a combination ticket was created together with the public transport network of Freiburg (Freiburger Verkehrs AG). Thereby, the entrance ticket for the ZMF also acts as a ticket for public transport. With that, ZMF has to be one of the pioneers in environmental protection at events.
The event organizers were facing major financial problems in the 1990s. On 22nd September 2006 – the year that the FIFA World Cup was taking place in Germany - the sponsoring association and the organizers of the ZMF had to file for insolvency because of low ticket sales, among other things. Since 2007, the ZMF is organized by the Zelt-Musik-Festival GmbH. This company was founded by ZMF founding father, Alexander Heisler, together with Andreas Schnitzler, Dieter Pfaff and Alexander Hanusch and is owned to one third by KOKO & DTK Entertainment GmbH. Alexander Hanusch and Marc Oßwald took over to manage the firm during the first year. Between 2012 and 2014, visitor numbers stabilised. Since 2017, Vaddi Concerts GmbH, managed by Marc Oßwald, and the Zelt-Musik-Festival GmbH are entrusted with the realization of the ZMF Freiburg.

"Due to laching parking space" --> I would say "doe to a lack of.." but that´s just my personal preference
"one of the first pioneers" - doesn´t the word pioneer indicate that they are one of the first? I think you can leave out the "first". --> yes, I didn't think of that :D Thanks!
I´m not sure but I thought you say "took over managing" --> I know the expression "to take to sth." does exist but I think it means sth different and can't be used in this context. I replaced it with your translation.

[edit]Auf dem Zelt-Musik-Festival traten Künstler und Bands wie Jethro Tull, Hannes Wader, Juliette Gréco, Gregory Porter, James Brown, Loriot, oder Ten Years After, aber auch Sasha, Fettes Brot, Katzenjammer, Annett Louisan oder Juli auf.
2009 besuchten 34.000 Zuschauer das Festival, im Jahr 2010 40.000, im Jahr 2011 42.000.[4] Es sind jetzt im Schnitt 40.000 Konzertbesucher und über 100.000 weitere Besucher auf dem Festivalgelände.[3] In den ersten 30 Jahren des Festivals mit 540 Tagen Musik gab es nach Angaben des Veranstalters 2000 Veranstaltungen, mit mehr als 500 000 Konzertbesuchern. Insgesamt waren es über 3 Millionen Festivalbesucher, die 22.000 Künstler sahen.[5] 2015 waren vor Festivalbeginn zwölf Konzerte ausverkauft, unter anderem das Eröffnungskonzert mit Andreas Bourani.[6] Traditionell bietet das ZMF neben den Konzerten im Zirkus- und Spiegelzelt entgeltfreie Auftritte im Fürstenbergzelt, auf der Open-Air-Bühne und dem Festivalgelände an, dazu gehört auch ein tägliches Aktionsprogramm mit Kleinkünstdarbietungen dazu.[7]
Im Jahre 2014 wurde der US-amerikanischer Jazzklarinettist Perry Robinson, der seit 1988 bei jedem Festival anwesend ist – er wird auch der Geist des Festivals genannt – anlässlich seines 75. Geburtstags mit der Galanacht des Festivals geehrt.[8][9]
Beim Festival 2015 kam es zum ersten Eklat durch eine Künstlerin: Lindsey Stirling sagte ihr Konzert, das um 20.00 Uhr beginnen sollte, um 17.30 Uhr wegen zu großer Hitze ab. Das Angebot, später zu beginnen, wollte sie nicht akzeptieren.[10] Stattdessen gab der erste Violinist des Philharmonischen Orchester Freiburg Manuel Dubrinski ein Konzert.

In 2015, 12 concerts were sold out before the festival started, one of them was the opening gig, where Andreas Bourani perfomed . [6] Besides the concerts in the “Zirkuszelt” and the “Spiegelzelt”, the ZMF traditionally offers free concerts in the “Fürstenbergzelt”, at the open-air stage and at several places around the festival area. Part of that offer is a daily cabaret program. [7]
At the 2015 festival, an artist caused the festivals´s first scandal: Lindsey Stirling cancelled her concert, stage time 8 p.m., at 5.30 p.m. due to the heat. She would not accept the proposition to postpone the concert for a few hours. [10] In her place, Manuel Dubrinski, the first violinist of the Philharmonic Orchestra Freiburg, performed at the festival.

Section 3 - Avocadolieber

[edit]Im großen Zirkuszelt waren es 18 durchgeführte Veranstaltungen in 19 Tagen, im Spiegelzelt 30 ohne die 5 Club-Nights, davon waren 14 ausverkauft. Beteiligt waren im Hauptprogramm 350 Künstler und 830 Künstler in den 100 Veranstaltungen des Actionprogramms. Dabei sieht man auch die Nachwuchsförderung mit 570 jugendlichen Nachwuchstalenten.[11]
Das Konzert „Im Auftrag der Liebe“ von Dieter Thomas Kuhn, das am 16. Juli 2016 im Zirkuszelt stattfindet, ging am 11. August 2015 in den Vorverkauf und war am selben Tag um 17:20 Uhr bereits ausverkauft.[12] Zum ersten Mal gibt ein Künstler zwei Konzerte in einem Jahr auf dem ZMF, und beide waren in kürzester Zeit ausverkauft.
Bei der „Gala für den Frieden“ 2016 des ZMF dirigierte Enrique Ugarte das Philharmonisches Orchester Freiburg, die Gala wurde zu Ehren des 80. Geburtstag von Giora Feidman, dem israelischen Klarinettisten und Klezmermusiker, ihm auch inhaltlich gewidmet.[13][14]
Der neue Stadtteil Dietenbach welches sehr nahe an den Festivalstandort heran reicht, hat bei den Veranstaltern des Festivals die Sorge ausgelöst, dass sie gezwungen werden wegzuziehen. Der Leiter der „Projektgruppe Dietenbach“ Rüdiger Engel, der ehemalige Leiter Baurechtsamt sagt dazu, dass das keine Problem sein sollte da man das ZMF über das Grundbuch absichern könnte – in ähnlicher Art wie beim Münchner Oktoberfest.[15]

[edit]In the big "Zirkuszelt", 18 events took place in 19 days. In the "Spiegelzelt", 30 events took place excluding the 5 club nights, 14 of which were sold out. A total of 350 artists participated in the main program and 830 artists in the more than one hundred events of the action program. During those events, 570 young talents were promoted.[11]
The concert "Im Auftrag der Liebe" by Dieter Thomas Kuhn, which took place on the 16th of July 2016 in the "Zirkuszelt", went on sale on the 11th of August 2015 and was already sold out on the same day at 5:20 p.m.[12] This was the first time an artist had given two concerts in one year at the ZMF, and both were sold out in a very short time.
Enrique Ugarte conducted the Freiburg Philharmonic Orchestra at the ZMF's "Gala for Peace" in 2016. The Gala was also dedicated to the Israeli clarinettist and klezmer musician Giora Feidman in honour of his 80th birthday.[13][14]
The new district called Dietenbach, which is very close to the festival location, has aroused concern among the organizers of the festival that they will be forced to move away. However, the head of the "Dietenbach Project Group", Rüdiger Engel, the former head of the building rights office, said that this should not be a problem as the ZMF could be secured via the land register - in a similar way to the Munich Oktoberfest[15].
