Aritz Aranburu

Aritz Aranburu Aspiazu (Getaria, Gipuzkoa, 30th August 1985) is a proffesional surfer. He is a food lover and traveller. Without a doubt he is one of Europe’s most complete athletes to ever stand on a surfboard. But his true genius is not just surfing good, is about reinventing himself over and over. His unparalleled ability to make the most out of the ASP “25 minutes, 2 best waves” format awarded him a spot in the ASP Top 45 in 2008 after winning the ASP European Title on 2007. That year, he was rewarded with the Best Basque Sportsman Prize.


Life

Aritz got on his first shortboard at the age of 7, he has won the Basque Championship at the age of 12 and 18. At the age of 14 and 16 the Basque Surf Federation chose him to take part in the European Championship. He won his first International Championship in Capbreton (France), at the age of 14. When he was 16, he took part in the Euro-Afrikan Championship where he finished 1st and 2nd in the Namibia and South Afrika spots. In 2007, he won the Zarauz Pro Surf and became the European champion. Later on, he took part in the WQS, and as he finished the 6th, he qualified to the WCT, where he competed with the best 45 surfers of the World. 2008 was a hard year for Aritz, he was injured from his ankle and knee, but in the end he managed to stay alive in the WCT. One of the best days for Aritz as a surfer was when he beat Kelly Slater, one of his biggest influence.

He joined the Quiksilver team at the age of 14, he is also in the Go Pro team, Volkswagen and Moskova, but the one who has always been with him is Pukas.
