The Kalimbeza rice project can once again make Caprivi Region the bread basket of Namibia.

[edit]

The Caprivi Region once known as the bread basket of Namibia is geared to reclaim its position which it almost lost to the Kavango Region due to conflicts regarding availability of fertile land for projects purposes. The upgrading and expansion plans of the Kalimbeza rice project situated some 30 Kilometres east of Katima Mulilo in the Kabbe Constituency is expected to help the Caprivi Region reclaim its position as the bread basket of Namibia. Views from the responsible Minister.

[edit]

The Minister of Agriculture, Water and Forestry John Mutorwa during his visit to the project in August stated that there are two project planned expansion for the financial year 2012/13, with the first expansion aimed at extending the rice fields as research have indicated the viability of growing rice in the area. The second expansion is aimed at infrastructural development. Honorable Mutorwa concluded by pointing out that once the project expansion is realized it will have the potential to improve food security in the country.[2]
