The Taif Agreement (National Reconciliation Accord) institutionalized the former system of government of the National Pact, with some alterations. The Taif Agreement altered the parliamentary representation of sects to a 1:1 ratio of Christians to Muslims, curtailed presidential power, disarmed former militias, and reduced the term of the Speaker of Parliament among other things (see the Wikipedia page Taif Agreement). The Taif Agreement codified the former National Pact's sectarian confessional system.^[1]
