Nancy Appleton (born May 10, 1935) is an American nutritionist and author of several books on the dangers of sugar consumption.
Early Life
[edit]Nancy Appleton was born in Los Angeles, California, and like many Americans, she had a diet that was less than healthy and involved the overconsumption of sugar. Growing up, she faced various health problems from allergies to more severe respiratory problems. Later in life, she would realize that these health problems were related to a poor diet and lifestyle.[1]
Career
[edit]Appleton attended University of California Los Angeles (UCLA), where she received a bachelor of science in Food and Nutrition. Her studies took her to Walden University, where she received her doctorate in Health Science. Drawing on childhood experiences, she wrote her dissertation titled[2] “An Alternative to the Germ Theory”[3], and in the 1970s she started lecturing on the dangers of sugar and the role diet plays in a person’s health.
Appleton is a medical researcher and lecturer who has investigated the effects of sugar on human health, and methods to improve diet and overall health. Her studies have been published in both local journals, such as Townsend Newsletter for Doctors,[4] and books geared toward the medical community as well as the general public. She is a world renowned lecturer who has spoken at The University Berkeley Medical and Dental Schools and Tulane University School of Medicine as well as appearing as a guest speaker on various radio programs that discuss a healthy lifestyle and habits.
Wanting to educate the people most affected by a poor diet, the impoverished communities of Africa, Appleton started working with Earthwatch in Zimbabwe, Africa. She worked with expecting mothers of malnourished children to teach them how to complete dietary protein requirements using native foods, and donated books that emphasized healthy living. [4]
