Newspaper editor John O'Sullivan is credited with coining the term manifest destiny in 1845 to describe the the overwhelming expansionist mindset in the country; It was proclaimed by John O’Sullivan as “Our manifest destiny to overspread the continent allotted by Providence for the free development of our yearly multiplying millions”.
Some found the opinion intriguing, but others were simply irritated. The Whig Party claimed the Manifest Destiny to be belligerent and pompous. Massachusetts Rep. Robert Winthrop used the term to mock Pres. James Polk’s policy toward Oregon. However, Democrats took up Manifest Destiny as a slogan.
The Manifest Destiny quite literally manifested through the claim of many territories such as Oregon, Texas, New Mexico and California. Later, the policy was revived through the purchase of Alaska before the Cviil War and even later (1890) through Hawaii.
The end of this policy came after the victorious war with Mexico. Under the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, which ended the war, the United States acquired more than 525,000 square miles of land, including present-day Arizona, California, western Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas, and Utah.
