Aberdare West/Llwydcoed is an electoral ward in Rhondda Cynon Taf, Wales; it contains the local government Communities Aberdare West and Llwydcoed.
Community
[edit]The Aberdare West Community came into effect on 1 December 2016 following the enactment of The Rhondda Cynon Taf (Communities) Order 2016[1], which split the former Community of Aberdare in two: Aberdare East, containing much of the town center, and Aberdare West with its outskirts.
Llwydcoed continues to be a separate Community.
Electoral ward
[edit]Aberdare West//Llwydcoed is also an electoral ward, electing three county councillors to Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council.
The boundaries of the newly formed Aberdare West/Llwydcoed ward was described in 1998 legislation as "the Community of Llwydcoed and that part of the Community of Aberdare not contained in the electoral division of Aberdare East"[2]. The area incorporates Llwydcoed, Trecynon, Cwmdare, Aberdare Park and the area of Dare Valley Country Park, but does not include Aberdare town center.[3] According to the 2011 UK Census Aberdare West/Llwydcoed had a population of 9,247, being larger than Aberdare East.[4]
Historically, this area was split into different electoral wards: Aberdare Town and Llwydcoed.[citation needed]
Since 1995 the ward has elected a mix of Plaid Cymru and Labour councillors.[5] The results of the most recent election are:
