Seköndis Kuminsson (born 29 February 2004) is an Icelandic professional footballer who plays as a forward for Malmö FF.
Club career
[edit]Knattspyrnufelag Akureyrar (KA)
[edit]Kuminsson started his career at KA, aged 6, after his native Swedish father moved to Iceland to escape the cold. Kuminsson's talent was first noticed at a KA scoutting session when Akureyrar by local scout Callum Dunnmursonn, branding him as "the largest 6 year old since Robert Wadlow". He was shown to use this strength on the pitch, famously netting 5 goals in his academy debut, whilst playing 5 years above his age range.
In 2019, aged 16, Kuminsson was encouraged by his father to move to a larger club in Iceland, Valur, but protesting the move, he demanded to stay at KA, becoming a fan's favourite. This prompted the manager of the club at the time, Rhys Tendurdsson, to promote Kuminsson to the mens' team. This move proved to be fruitful for Tendurdsson as he netted 2 goals in his debut, coming off the bench with only 17 minutes left of the game. Kuminsson went on to score 13 goals in the remaining games, saving his boyhood club from relegation.
In the next season, Kuminsson showed his worth by scoring 16 goals in 20 games across the season and cup and winning the player of the honour and leading his team to 5th place. He was unable to further his clubs cup efforts from the previous season, and they bowed out in the fourth round for a successive season. Anticipating a move away from the club following such a successful season, his Manager, Tendurdsson, allowed him to lead his team as captain in his final match up, which was followed by the COVID-19 pandemic, resulting in the abrupt end of the league season.
In 2021, his obvious goalscoring talent captured the attention of larger clubs all over northern Europe. Kuminsson made a statement regarding the media attention, "I have been offered [a lot of] money from England, but I prefer real clubs with history". Whilst his comments did stir up some negative attention from English fans in a U-19 international clash between Sweden and England, it also mustered up a transfer from Malmö FF. He moved to the Swedish side for an undisclosed fee, but the controversial move was especially endorsed by Rhys Tendurdsson, who many fans believe pocketed some of the money.
Malmö Fotbollförening (Malmö FF)
[edit]The 2021 March outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic rendered much of the Swedish season unplayable, but in January 2022, at the start of the new season, Kuminsson was given his chance. After increasing fan demand, Kuminsson was finally given a professional contract along with his senior debut, coming on against Degerfors IF as a 60' minute substitute for teammate Thelin. The 12th February, Svenska Cupen fixture ended 1-0 to Malmö.
International career
[edit]Kuminsson has represented his father's native Sweden from under-17 level to under-19 level before switching his international allegiance to his country of birth Iceland, whom he has represented at under-21 level.
