Whitesburg Drive is a major north-south thoroughfare in Huntsville, Alabama[1] that separates the city east and west. On an average day, approximately 28,000 vehicles travel Whitesburg Drive.[2]
Street Description
[edit]From the south, Whitesburg Drive begins at Memorial Parkway (US-231) and travels north over a railroad tracks that once belonged to the Louisville and Nashville Railroad. Whitesburg Drive intersects Blanda Drive continues past one of Huntsville's multiple post offices and intersects Lily Flagg and Byrd Springs Roads.
The street is consider South Whitesburg Drive (as it runs south of the north/south divider road) and divides the city east and west. Every road that intersects Whitesburg has the suffix of either east or west. Drake Avenue, for example, is Drake Avenue Southwest on the west side of Whitesburg and Southeast on the east side of Whitesburg. The road once ran all the way south to the Tennessee River, but with the construction of Memorial Parkway, the road was pulled back drastically. Five miles of roadway was renamed to Memorial Parkway.
History
[edit]Until 1955, Whitesburg Drive was the original US Route 231 until Memorial Parkway was built to bypass downtown.
