Introduction

[edit]

Hi, I'm Natalie. I am currently a student at the University of Guelph. In september I will be starting my final year of Guelph's Applied Human Nutrition program. During my time working on my my BASc. I have also been completing courses to enable me to receive a Food Science Certificate!

I am currently enrolled in two summer courses for this year, CIS*2050 being one of them. I chose this course as I find it interesting how the aspects of society and technology (computers) intertwine so much in the world today, and I am looking forward to learning more!

Personal Life

[edit]

I was born in Toronto, Ontario, more specifically in an area called East York for people who are more familiar with the Toronto area. Even more specifically, in a neighborhood called Leaside. This is the area I come back to when not in Guelph during the school year. I recently started working at Shoppers Drug Mart for the summer while also completing two summer courses.

In Toronto I live with my mother - Nancy, and my younger sister - Andrea. However during the school year I live with three of my girlfriends in an old victorian home close to campus.

Throughout the year I like to keep active with going to the gym, swimming and hot yoga. My favourite thing to do would have to be catching up with friends over coffee - specifically lattes, I have an obsession with them!

One of my passions is traveling, I love exploring the world any chance I can get. I have been to a few cities within British Columbia, explored a lot of Ontario, and had a bus tour of Eastern Canada. There are a few cities within the states I have visited, but my favourite places so far are definately in Europe! I have had the chance to visit family in England a few times already and last summer I went to Madrid and Barcelona in Spain, and Paris, France. The profile picture displayed is a picture I took while in Paris last summer (2011) of the Eiffel Tower, or as it is known in french "La Tour Eiffel" (see profile picture).

Education and Academic Career

[edit]

I attended Leaside High School in Toronto for my highschool, where after having to complete an extra year of courses I finally figured out what I wanted to study in university. This was due to the fact that it wasn't until my final semester (or supposed to be final semester) of Grade 12 when I took a nutrition course that I realized my passion for the topic and that it was possible to make a career out of my interest in the field!

After my extra year of courses I was accepted to the University of Guelph in the Applied Human Nutrition program. It is a 4 year degree, where at the end I will receive a Bachelor of Applied Science. I am also completing online food science courses to that I may receive a Certificate in Food Science, as well.

After my undergraduate degree I hope to complete my masters in community nutrition and eventually become a Registered Dietician!

I definitely have a long road ahead of me though!!

Hobbies

[edit]

Some things I enjoy doing in my free-time are...

  • go to the gym
  • hot yoga
  • cook random recipes with ingredients I am craving
  • go for coffee with friends and catch up
  • research random nutrition related topics
  • and of course, SHOPPING!

Volunteer Work

[edit]

Currently I am volunteering with the Heart and Stroke as a SPARK Ambassador for the SPARK Together for Healthy Kids initiative[1].

I am helping to:

  1. advocate access to healthier foods and physical activity for all Ontarians
  2. help address the epidemic of childhood obesity by promoting health within our communities
  3. work together to inspire communities, governments, businesses, and individuals and families to spark collective change [2].
