Cheriss May is a visual journalist and educator. Originally from Kansas City, MO., May currently resides in the Washington, D.C. area. She received her B.A. in Communications with an emphasis in Advertising and Electronic Studio from Howard University (Washington, D.C.) in 1994.

May's career as a visual journalist started with Gannett Co. Inc. in 1995. May has worked as an assistant news editor, graphic design for The Jackson (Tenn.) Sun, The Courier-Post (Cherry Hill, N.j.), The Washington Post and USA Today. She became the first African-American Editor for the European & Pacific Stars & Stripes newspaper in 1999. As the assistant managing editor, photos and graphics, she led staffs in Washington, D.C., Europe and Asia. May has received numerous design awards as a print journalist and had the honor of being the keynote speaker at Tuskegee University's (Tuskegee, AL) Annual Communication Banquet in 2007.

As a photographer, May traveled to South Africa as the official photographer for a group of journalists to tour the Midwest Province of South Africa. She has been commissioned to photograph people like Nancy Wilson, Dr. Dorothy I. Height, The Martin Luther King Memorial dedication, and (then Senators) Barack Obama and John McCain. May shoots everything from corporate events to portraits. She has shot live studio shows for Fox News Sunday with Chris Wallace. Her photos have been published on The Associated Press news service and other online media and in numerous print publications including, but not limited to: USA Today, The Philadelphia Inquirer, The Afro-American Newspapers, XXL Magazine, Uptown Magazine

May taught Journalism at The University of Maryland, College Park in 2002-2003. In 2003, she joined Howard University's John H. Johnson School of Communications Journalism Department teaching advertising copywriting and design and publication production and design.

In 2006, May created Unified Soul (www.lovewhoiamstore.com), a line of positive t-shirts that celebrates and encourages diversity in individuals and communities through fashion, art and music.

May has over 15 years of experience in presentation design and print/online content management, extensive knowledge and experience in media publishing and pre-press and production.
