User:NazaSuzuki/List of Super Bowl champions (2)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The New England Patriots (shown here in Super Bowl XXXIX) have won the most Super Bowls with seven championships.

The Super Bowl is the annual American football game that determines the champion of the National Football League (NFL). The game culminates a season that begins in the previous calendar year, and is the conclusion of the NFL playoffs. The winner receives the Vince Lombardi Trophy. The contest is held in an American city, chosen three to four years beforehand, usually at warm-weather sites or domed stadiums. Since January 1971, the winner of the American Football Conference (AFC) Championship Game has faced the winner of the National Football Conference (NFC) Championship Game in the culmination of the NFL playoffs.

Before the 1970 merger between the American Football League (AFL) and the National Football League (NFL), the two leagues met in four such contests. The first two were marketed as the "AFL–NFL World Championship Game", but were also casually referred to as "the Super Bowl game" during the television broadcast. Super Bowl III in January 1969 was the first such game that carried the "Super Bowl" moniker in official marketing; the names "Super Bowl I" and "Super Bowl II" were retroactively applied to the first two games. The AFC/AFL leads the NFC/NFL with 30 wins to 28. Twenty-four franchises, including teams that have relocated to another city, have won the Super Bowl.

Game information

The Carolina Panthers held off a late rally by the Kansas City Chiefs to win their first Super Bowl championship in franchise history. The Chiefs received the ball first, and on the first play of the game, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes threw an interception to Shaq Thompson that was returned for a touchdown. The play was the first time in Super Bowl history that a touchdown was scored on the first play from scrimmage. After the pick-six, Mahomes got the ball back, but was sacked twice in a row and the Chiefs were forced to punt. Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey returned the punt to the Chiefs' 40-yard line. The Panthers took advantage of the good field position, as quarterback Sam Darnold went 3/3 on the drive before hitting D. J. Moore for a 7-yard touchdown. The Chiefs, now down 14–0, answered with a long touchdown drive, capped off by 4-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Tyreek Hill from Mahomes. After a Panthers punt, the Chiefs were able to get into field goal range, as kicker Harrison Butker made a 39-yard field goal to make the score 14–7. However, the Panthers quickly answered, as Darnold threw a deep 49-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Terrace Marshall Jr. The Chiefs were able to add on a field goal before halftime, making it a one possession game at 21–13.

The Panthers received the ball to open the second half. On fourth play of the half, Darnold threw a 62-yard touchdown pass to Moore, his second of the game and Darnold's third. Moore beat the Chiefs corner off the line of scrimmage, caught the ball, then outraced the safety to the end zone. On the next drive, the Chiefs looked to answer, but Mahomes threw a costly interception. The Panthers were able to capitalize with a long drive culminating in a Darnold 5-yard touchdown run to extend the lead to 35–13. With the Chiefs now down by 22 points, they drove quickly down the field and scored on a Mecole Hardman 5-yard touchdown pass from Mahomes. The Chiefs went for the 2-point conversion, but Mahomes was sacked, making the score 35–19. The Panthers got the ball back and drove to the Chiefs' 33-yard line where they faced a 4th down & 1, which they were unable to convert. The Chiefs then put together a long scoring drive that ended with a 5-yard touchdown pass to Hill from Mahomes. On the critical 2-point conversion to make it a one-possession game, Mahomes handed the ball off to running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire, who was stopped just short of the goal line. With 3:55 left in the game, the Chiefs attempted an onside kick, but failed to recover. However, during the next Panthers drive on third down, Darnold was hit and fumbled the ball, which was picked up by defensive lineman Taven Bryan and returned 40 yards for a touchdown, making the score 35–32 with only 1:34 left. The Chiefs attempted another onside kick and again failed to recover. The Panthers were able to run the clock almost completely out, failing on a fourth down conversion inside the Chiefs' 10-yard line with only 7 seconds to go. On the last play of the game, Mahomes threw a deep pass that was knocked down, ending the game.

The win gave the Panthers their first Super Bowl championship in their 27-year franchise history. The Chiefs' 19 unanswered points in the fourth quarter is tied for the most in Super Bowl history with the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LI. Quarterback Sam Darnold won Super Bowl MVP after going 12/17 passing for 229 yards and 3 touchdowns, as well as putting up 6 yards and 1 touchdown rushing.
