VLS-equipped multipurpose attack submarine

A VLS-equipped multipurpose attack submarine is a submarine that is designed for attacking and sinking other submarines, surface combatants, and merchant vessels with torpedo tube-launched torpedoes and cruise missiles, as well as being able to attack enemy land targets and surface combatants with VLS-launched cruise or ballistic missiles. These types of submarines are hybrids between attack submarines and cruise missile submarines and/or ballistic missile submarines. This type of submarine prioritizes both the hunter-killer role and the VLS-launched cruise or ballistic missile strike role instead of focusing on one segment.
The Russian Yasen-class submarine is the first submarine of this type and is followed by the American Virginia-class submarine.[1] The trend is now ongoing on several other new submarine classes, such as the South Korean KSS-III class and Chinese Type 093B class.[2][3][4][5] Both of the Russian Navy and the United States Navy are going to replace previous generation nuclear powered attack submarines and cruise missile submarines with the VLS-equipped multipurpose attack submarine type.[1][6][7][8][9]
