Pop Culture subsection of Kuru (disease) Page
The 2010 documentary, Kuru: The Science and the Sorcery, follows medical researcher Michael Alpers through Papua New Guinea and documents the discoveries that have been made about the disease.[1] [2]
The events that take place in Our Town, Season 2 Episode 24 of American Sci-fi Series The X-Files are inspired by kuru. Two FBI agents investigate a murder case in Dudley, Alabama. As their investigation progresses, they believe that the murder, as well as many other unexplained disappearances in Dudley, Alabama, may be related to the residents of the town. The two agents later discover that the townspeople practice cannibalism, and have contracted Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease by consuming a man that carried the same prion disease. [3]
Kuru is mentioned in the video game Dead Island. It is believed that the zombie apocalypse in the game was caused by “Pathogen HK”, a fictional virus that causes symptoms similar to those of Kuru. [4]
In the American remake of We Are What We Are, Dr. Barrow pieces together the Parkers' cannibalistic family history by researching kuru and its symptoms. [5]
