At Night I Dream of Carlyle is the seventh studio album by American singer Drew Hacks. It was released on August 2, 2040, through Hacks' record label Diamond Joint in association with Universal Music Group. Following the release of his sixth studio album, Not Natural at All (2038), the singer turned to his first albums, mainly the debut Strange Intentions of a Stilted One (2016), and decided to return to making electronic rock songs. He began working on new material in May 2039 and was joined by previous collaborators, including Fatima Al Qadiri, Tokimonsta, and WondaGurl, as well as newcomers Dan Auerbach, Greg Kurstin, and Stargate. Recording sessions took place at the Diamond Joint studio in Los Angeles and lasted until March 2040.
The lyrical content of At Night I Dream of Carlyle is mainly inspired by dreams that Hacks had in late 2039 about the ghost town of Carlyle, Montana, through which he passed by in route to Beach, North Dakota, to visit a friend. The singer detailed that, while admiring the local "ghostly sights", he experienced a "mind supercut" of past moments in his music career. As a result, the album discusses subjects around self-assurance, hard work, and self-enjoyment. Musically, it is an electropop and electronic rock album that blends rock, goth, and arena rock, and makes expansive use of backing vocals, electronic instrumentation, choirs, and nature sounds. American singer Lana Del Rey was personally contacted by Hacks to collaborate in a track for the record.
At Night I Dream of Carlyle was a commercial success. It debuted at number two on the US Billboard 200, becoming Hacks' second consecutive album not to debut atop the chart; it eventually climbed to number one in the country. The album also peaked atop the charts of the United Kingdom, Belgium, Canada, France, Italy, South Africa, and other regions. The lead single, "Cry in the Afternoon" featuring Del Rey, was issued in May 2040 and attained positive commercial success, debuting atop the US Billboard Hot 100. "Drain Me Down" and "Delivery Guy" were released as the following singles in August and October. To further promote the album, Hacks embarked on the Cry in the Afternoon with Me tour, which took place between September and December 2040.
Upon its release, At Night I Dream of Carlyle was met with critical acclaim, with praise directed towards its songwriting, production, instrumentation, lyrical content, rock music influences, and overall concept. The singer's vocal performance and abilities as a lyricist were particularly singled out by music critics. Many reviewers deemed it a "soft" and "heavenly" return to Hacks' roots and one of the best albums of 2040. The album appeared in several year-end lists of best albums, including the ones made by Los Angeles Times, The New York Times, NPR, Pitchfork, and Rolling Stone. At the 82nd ceremony of the Grammy Awards, At Night I Dream of Carlyle was nominated for Album of the Year and Best Album Notes and won Best Pop Vocal Album, making it Hacks' fifth consecutive album to win the category.
