# Krishna Janmashtam

[edit]

Krishna janmashtami, also know simply as Janmashtami, is a Hindu festival celebrating the birth of Lord Krishna, who is considered the eight avatar of Lord Vishnu. It typically falls on the eight day (Ashtami) of the Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) in the Hindu calendar month of Bhadrapada, which usually coressponds to August or september in the Gregorian calendar.

Here are some key points about krishna janmashtami :

  1. Birth of Lord Krishna : Janmashtami commemorates the birth of Lord Krishna who is believed to have been born in the town of Mathura, India, over 5,000 years ago.
  2. Religious Significance : Lord Krishna is revered for his teachings in the Bhagavad Gita, a sacred text that forms a part of the Indian epic, the Mahabharata.
  3. Celebrations : The festival is celebrated with great enthusiasm and devotion. Devotees fast, sing devotional songs (bhajans), and visit temples to offer prayers and seek blessings.
  4. Radha-Krishna Devotion : The festival also celebrates the divine love between Lord Krishna and Radha, his beloved companion. Devotees often reenact scenes of their love story through dance and drama.
  5. Dahi Handi : In the state of Maharashtra and some other regions, a popular ritual known as "Dahi Handi" is observed. It involves forming human pyramids to break a plot of curd, which is suspended at a height. This reenacts young Krishna's mischievous act of stealing butter.
