Equality Archive Women's History Wikipedia Edit-a-thon - 2017 - Baruch College

[edit]

The 2017 Equality Archive Women's History Wikipedia Edit-a-thon is hosted by Baruch College in New York City.

Join us as we work with EqualityArchive.com for a Wikipedia-edit- a-thon in which members of the Baruch College community contribute content related to women’s history on Wikipedia, the largest and most popular general reference resource on the internet. In this Women’s History Month session you will learn how to create knowledge by writing and editing Wikipedia entries about the people, issues, and events that inform women’s history. Wikipedia editing skills are not required. A limited number of computers will be available to use, please bring a laptop if you have one.

Most college and university professors warn students NOT to use Wikipedia. But creating and editing articles leads students to do all the things academics value most -- citing credible sources and learning to paraphrase work well. A professor at Baruch, Dr. Kyra Gaunt, was recently acknowledged in the WIkiEdu inaugural newsletter for improving representations of articles related to social inequality: "The concept of toxic masculinity has attracted a lot of interest in recent years, but the Wikipedia article was just a three-sentence stub when a student in Kyra Gaunt’s Social Inequality class started work on the article. In the course of expanding it, the student added sections addressing the subject in the contexts of sports, violence, and sexuality. Other students in the class expanded articles on a variety of topics including housing inequality, social inequality and women’s sports."
