Maruti-Suzuki Workers' Struggle

[edit]
Labor Movement in Haryana, India

The Maruti-Suzuki Workers' Struggle or the Maruti Suzuki Terminated Workers' Struggle is an ongoing labor agitation against Maruti-Suzuki in Manesar, Haryana that began over a decade ago after the illegal termination of 546 permanent workers and 1800 contract workers of the Manesar plant after a controversial factory-fire led to the death of a manager & subsequent arrest of nearly 150 workers in July 2012[1]. 117 of the arrested workers were acquitted and released in 2017 after the continued agitation of the terminated employees, & as of 2022, all the arrested workers are out of jail (11 on grounds of bail, rest on acquittal, except Jia Lal - who died of cancer during his incarceration due to continued lack of treatment - & __ - who was fatally electrocuted while out on parole).

Before the Haryana Legislative Assembly Elections of 2024, the movement, led by the Maruti Workers Struggle Committee, was reignited more than 12 years after it first began with an indefinite sit-in protest at Manesar Tehsil. Journalists & trade union activists have cited the movement as a 'remarkable [example] of class unity & militant class action in contemporary India', also noting its absence from mainstream Indian reportage to highlight the absence of a labor beat in the country.
