Moore United Football Club Introduction

Moore United Football Club is a junior football club based in Falty, Oldtown, Athlone, Co Roscommon, Ireland. The club has been an active participant in the Roscommon & District Football League (RDFL) since 1975. The underage teams compete in the Roscommon and District Youth league (RDYSL). There are two adult Teams and 12 underage teams consistng of 250 members.

Moore United currently competes in the RDFL Premier Division. It is affiliated to the Connacht FA and FAI Region 8. Moore United underage competes in the Roscommon and District Youth & Schools League RDYSL for boys & girls teams.

Future Goals

The club aims to continue competing at a high level in the RDFL Premier Division and Connacht FA competitions. Continue developing young talent through robust coaching programs. Strengthen ties with the local community and maintain its role as a community cornerstone.

Foundation: Moore United FC was establishment October 1st 1975.

Facilities

Moore United FC plays their home games in Falty Park. The clubhouse is an old school which has seen major redevelopments in recent years, with two large modern dressing rooms with showers, a room for a referee and modern kitchen. Grounds have also gone under major changes, with the main pitch becoming fully floodlit and dugouts added. A second was pitch purchased and play host to under-age teams who play calendar football from March to October. Moore United have two senior teams competing in the RDFL and twelve under-age teams in the RDYSL.

History

The Moore United crest consists of a round tower located at St Marys Church a well-known landmark in Moore and is inscribed in Latin “Aequiate in Certamine”

​Moore United FC original committee consisted of Chairperson; Michael Grenham, Secretary; Pat Higgins and Treasurer; Martin Craven. They played their first game against what where to become Moore United's closest rival over the years Skyvalley Rovers on the 30th November 1975 losing 3-0 in a friendly game. The first competitive game occured in January 19756

​In 1979 gained promotion to the First Division. Moore United reached the Roscommon Cup Final in 1985 beating Skyvalley Rovers in the semi-final but losing the final in a closely fought 2-0 to Dubarry. Moore United won their first piece of silverware in 1985 when the won the Second Division Cup accepted by club captain Mike Burns. Moore United completed the double by winning the league in what was a great year season for the club.

​In 1993 Moore United won the First Division Cup beating Ahascragh United on penalties with Moore goalkeeper John Griffin saving two. The nineties was a good decade for Moore United B team, they completed the double by winning the Division 3 League unbeaten and Division Three Cup 1995-96. 1996 was also the year Moore United celebrated their 21st anniversary. 1997-98 Moore United u18 Team won the RDFL Cup beating Castlerea, goals coming from Jonathan Dunning and Niall Hogan.

​Moore United started the new millennium by winning the Division 1 Cup, while Moore United B where runner-up in the inaugural Millennium Cup. The new Millennium turned out to be Moore’s best periods for silverware, in 2000-2001 Moore United won the First Division without losing a game. Moore United won their first RDFL Challenge Cup in 2002 beating local rival Skyvalley Rovers on penalties after the game finished 2-2, Moore’s goals coming from Fergal Duffy and Jimmy Greene, also in 2002 Moore United B won the Division 3 Cup. The 2002/2003 season ended with Moore United winning the Premier Division and the first time in their history and runner’s-up in the Premier Division Cup. The rest of the noughties belong to Moore United B teams with three leagues and one cup including a double in 2004.

​After a few lean year’s silverware returned to Both Moore United Teams. In his first year as Moore United team manager former League of Ireland player Padraig Moran gained promotion to the Premier league by winning Division One and followed that up by winning the Division One Cup. Moore United B finished of the season winning the Division Two Cup to complete a memorable triple.

Moore United Story

The Club was founded in 1975 with Michael Grenham the first Chairman and Ballaghaderreen man Pat Higgins their first secretary. Martin Creavin was first treasurer of the Club.Their first game was against Skyvalley Rovers and their first Competitive game was in the Challenge Cup against Loughglinn / Tarmon in January 1976.

The team to take the field on that January day was Pat Higgins, John Kenny, Johnny Murray, Martin Creavin, Pat Mulvey, Sean Finn, Tommy Kelly, Jimmy McManus, Brendan Murray, Mick Mulvey, Gerry Carty, Dominic Flynn, and Thomas Nolan. Since its formation Moore Utd have always been a very competitive and well-organised Club.

Over the years they have had a nice blend of talented players and dedicated workers such as Johnny Murray, John Griffin, Dermott Dunican, Jimmy Greene, Jason Scully, Ta Duignan, Thomas Carty, Paul and Gerry Kelly, Pat Moynihan, Packie McManus, David Kenny, Mike Burns, Mattie Duffy, Michael Kelly, Padraig Glynn, Gerry Kelly, Maureen Griffin, Madge Grenham, Roseleen Glennon, Tommy Grenham, Joan Carty and many more.

​1976–77 season

By the 1976–77 season 17 teams were members of the League with this season with teams divided into the Northern and SouthernSections. The top 2 teams in each section played off the title.The Teams playing were St. Comans, Cam Celtic, Creagh Utd, Moore Utd, Skyvalley Rvs, Southern Wanders Ahascragh Utd, Roscommon Rangers, Shiven Rvs, Ballaghaderreen, Ruskey Rvs. Boyle Celtic, Castlerea Celtic, Strokestown Utd, Tarmon, Lough Harps and Ballymoe Rgs. Teams From Farm Utd and Glinsk had also played for a short period prior to this season.

Castlerea Celtic Beat St Comans to win the Cup. Southern Wanders were the First winners of the newly introduced league Cup when they beat Moore Utd in the Final.

The League itself had joint Secretaries for the season with Tom O'Connor and Pat Higgins carrying out the job. James Candon was Chairman of the league.A four month Postal and Phone strike caused major disruption to theLeague during the 1978 79 season and with the Secretary Pat Higgins living in the South of the County it became almost impossible to make contact with the clubs in the North of the County

​1978/79

Pat Higgins replaced James Candon as Chairman of the League and Tom O Connor continued as Fixtures Secretary with James Candon taking over as Correspondence secretary.

​1981/82

The Premier Division was first formed

​1982/83 ​

The Emerging Knockroghery Rovers under Manager Bertie Fallon won the Division 2 Title with Moore Utd gaining promotion as Runners up.

1983/84

Dubarry Won the Roscommon and District League challenge Cup.They Beat Moore Utd at Taughmaconnell on a 1–0 score line. An injury to the Moore’s best played before the game may have had an influence on the score line

​ 1984/85

Moore Utd were the Winners of the Division 2 with the Castleplunket side let by Jimmie Kearney finishing as runners up

1986/87

Cam Celtic were Clear winners of the First Division Championship. Moore Utd Finished as runners up.

​1988/89

​ Clonown Utd with the Impressive Garry Noone and Michael Dunning scoring at will won the Division 1 title from Moore Utd.

Kilkerrin Utd were showing signs of being a force in the Roscommon and District League and they finished as runners up in the Division 2 League with Moore United B as runners up in the Cup Cloonfad Utd won the Premier Division Cup for the second Time and Moore United after beating St. Johns athletic in the Final won the division 1 Cup.

​1991/92 Season

Aughrim United won the Division 2 League Championship and Moore United finished as runners up.

1992 /93 season

Moore United under Manager Ta Duignan won the Division 1 Cup after beating Ahascragh United in the final.

1993/94

Oak Ramblers beat Moore United to win the Division 1 Cup

1994/95

Glen Celtic beat Moore United. 3-1 in the final to lift the Division 1 Cup. Moore United won promotion to the Premier Division. St Patrick’s Utd beat Moore United “B” 2-1 in the Division 3 Cup final with Thomas Carty scoring for Moore United and Sean McKeague and Peter Hough scored for the winners.

1995/96

Moore United second side won the division 3-league title with new side Ballygar finishing in second place. Moore United “B” beat Cloonfad’s second side to win the Division 3 Cup.

1998/99

Moore United are relegated to RDFL Division One.

1999/00

With David Kenny calling the shots as Manager Moore United beat Ahascragh United 2-1 after extra time to win the Division 1 Cup. Gerry Kelly and Johnny Dunning scored for Moore and David Leonard replied for Ahascragh United.

A separate competition for the Millennium Cup was played this season and Strokestown beat Moore Utd 2–1 in the Final.

2000/01

Moore United made a welcome return to the Premier Division following their winning of the Division 1 Championship. With Jason Scully their leading goal scorer they finished four points ahead of Rahara Rovers FC who were also promoted.

2001/02

The 2001/02 season will be remembered as the one that Moore United finally came good. After finishing 3rd in the RDFL Premier Division, before a huge home support on their own ground at Falty they won the Roscommon and District League Challenge Cup for the first time. To add to the occasion they defeated their old rivals Skyvalley Rovers FC following a thrilling penalty shootout. When it emerged that the sides were meeting in the Final both teams agreed to a toss of a coin to decided the venue. Moore United lost the toss but did manage to hold out for a 0–0 draw away in Taughmaconnell in the first game.

In the replay Moore United broke the deadlock six minutes after half time when Fergal Duffy scored after a header from Paul Kelly came back off the cross bar. Just Six minutes later Harry Costello equalised. The same player gave Skyvalley Rovers the lead 13 minutes later when he slotted home a Sean Fahy rebound. However the popular Jimmy Greene came on as substitute for Moore United and he scored an equaliser with ten minutes remaining in normal time. There were no goals in extra time and Moore United won the penalty shoot out.

The Moore Utd Captain Thomas Carty scored the winning penalty for a jubilant team and supporters.

​ Moore United “B” beat Monksland’s second side into second place to win the Division 3 Title.

2002/03

Moore United followed up on their Cup win of the previous season by winning the Ruby Oil sponsored Premier Division Championship for the first time. Mark Duffy, Johnny Hession, Gerard Kelly, Paul Kelly, Declan Duffy and Thomas Carty were some of their regular Goals scorers.

Kilkerrin Utd won the Premier Division Cup and this was the first time the Club won a competition in the Roscommon and District league. They beat Moore United in the final.

2003/04

Moore United second side were playing very well in division 2 and had four points to spare over Ballinakill at the end of the season. Moore United “B” beat Heatmerchants to win the division 2 Cup. No goals were scored before Moore came out on top following a penalty shootout.

2004/05

Moore Utd ”B” won the division 1 title

2005/06

May 2005 saw the beginning of the Masters League with eleven teams taking part for the first time. It was a huge success and provided a great occasion for players who had played against each other over the years. Ballinasloe Town, Moylough, St. Bernards Cam Celtic, Skyvalley Rovers, Baylough Rovers, Shiven Rovers Glen Celtic, Laurencetown Utd, Castlerea Celtic and Moore United all played.

Community

The club provides Community Involvement. Moore United prides itself on: Organizing community events, fundraisers, and youth development programs. Actively involving local businesses and residents in sponsorship and support activities.
