basic components
[edit]- The basic components of scaffolding are tubes, couplers, base jacks, and boards. Tubes are usually steel or aluminium, in various lengths and with a standard diameter of 1.9 inches, 48.3 mm, and a standard metal thickness for steel of 4mm, although also produced in 3mm steel.
- Scaffolding stands on base plates (or base jacks)
- Upright tubes are called standards
- Horizontal cross-pieces joining the standards are ledgers
- Horizontal scaffold tubes at right angles to the ledgers, and sitting on them, are transoms. These should be spaced about one metre apart and the spacing should not exceed 1.2 metres.
- ledgers are joined to standards by right angle couplers
- transoms are joined to ledgers by putlog couplers
- diagonal bracings are joined to other tubes by swivel couplers
- battens, boards, or decking units, sit on the transoms and should overhang them by a minimum of 50mm
- Scaffold ties fasten the scaffold to a nearby structure, failing which the scaffold will need to be braced diagonally from the ground
- A bay is the space between two pairs of standards and the spacing is usually between 1.8 and 2.4 metres.
- The scaffolding width is determined by the width of the boards. The minimum width allowed is 600 mm, but a typical four-board scaffold would be 870 mm wide, from standard to standard. Toe boards at the edge of the platform are usually scaffolding boards set on edge.
- Scaffolding Boards provide the working surface and are seasoned wood. They are usually 38mm thick, but the thickness can also be 50 mm and even 63 mm. The standard width is 225 mm and the maximum length is 3.9 m. The board ends are protected by metal plates called hoop irons or by nail plates, often with the company name stamped into them. Timber scaffold boards in the UK should comply with the requirements of BS 2482.

[edit]“ It is a requirement of the Work at Height Regulations 2005 that unless a scaffold is assembled to a generally recognised standard configuration, eg NASC Technical Guidance TG20 for tube and fitting scaffolds or similar guidance from manufacturers of system scaffolds, the scaffold should be designed by bespoke calculation, by a competent person, to ensure it will have adequate strength, rigidity and stability while it is erected, used and dismantled.”

[edit]1: https://www.completefrance.com/french-property/renovation-new-build/an-amazing-property-renovation-in-brittany-1-5293967 New building work must comply with a complex set of energy efficiency regulations called the Réglementation Thermique 2012 (RT2012). We insulated the house above and beyond the required standards in anticipation of any future amendments to the rules. This will make the house far more comfortable to live in and save on heating bills. Vapour membranes and sheer walls have also been used as have reinforcing joists with plates.
