The Studio Band

[edit]The Beach Boys long career started in the summer of 1961. Al Jardine was the catalyst. He suggested to Brian that they form a band, and Brian offers up Carl and Mike as possible members.

Al Goes to Dental School
[edit]By February of the next year, Jardine started to get discouraged by the low payments the group has received for gigs. He resigns from the band and reforms The Islanders, a folk group that he had been in earlier. He also re-enrolls at El Camino Community College with the goal of becoming a dentist. To replace him, the group lands upon David Marks, a neighbor of the Wilson family. He is just 14 years old.

6 Young Men
[edit]In May of 1963, Jardine would replace Brian for some shows. Brian was tired of constantly touring, and called Jardine, who was willing to come back.

The Original Lineup, pt. 2
[edit]Following an argument with Murry Wilson, father of the Wilson brothers and the band's manager, David Marks quit the band. He would stay on until he fulfilled all of his touring commitments. By October of '63, he was gone for good.

Brian Breaks Down
[edit]The classic lineup was in place both in the studio and on the road until December of 1964. Brian, just 3 weeks after getting married, would have a nervous breakdown on a plane headed to a show in Houston. Somewhat remarkably, he manages to play that show, but soon leaves the touring band. He is replaced temporarily by Glen Campbell. In April of 1965, Bruce Johnston accepts an offer to become a member of the band, at first just replacing Brian on the road, but very quickly becomes a member of the studio band as well, starting with his background vocals on California Girls.

Enter The Flame
[edit]In 1971, Dennis Wilson injured his hand while punching a window. He would be unable to play the drums for quite some time. To replace him, Carl brings in two members of the only other group to be signed to Brother Records, The Flame. Ricky Fataar plays the drums, and Blondie Chaplin is on guitar, and also sings lead on a few songs, most notably Sail On, Sailor.

Bruce leaves
[edit]Bruce Johnston leaves the band, not happy with the group's manager, Jack Rieley. Following his departure Bruce would form Equinox Records with Terry Melcher.

Blondie leaves
[edit]Following a fist fight with the group's new manager, Steve Love, Blondie Chaplin quits the band. He qould go on to release a solo album, and become a well respected studio musician. Since the late 1990s, he has served as a backing vocalist and occasional guitar player for The Rolling Stones on tour.

Ricky leaves
[edit]Ricky Fataar leaves the group to join Joe Walsh's new band, Barnstorm. He would also become a studio musician, and was a member of The Rutles. His departure brought the band down to its five original members, for the first time since 1965.

Bruce comes back
[edit]Having trouble with the production on the band's new album, L.A. (Light Album), Brian calls Bruce and invites him back into the band. Johnston accepts.

Dennis Wilson drowns
[edit]On December 28, 1983, Dennis Wilson drowned in Marina del Rey. He was apparently looking for valuables that he had thrown off of his boat, Harmony, years ago. He was 39 years old.

Carl Wilson dies
[edit]On February 6, 1998, Carl Wilson dies of cancer. This puts an end to The Beach Boys recording career.
