The following are guidelines created by Wikipedia:WikiProject Beauty Pageants, to help assess the notability of articles on beauty pageant topics, including guidelines for inclusion of pageants and participants. These guidelines are meant not to supercede the Wikipedia:Notability policy, but to act as a specific supplement to the guidelines at Wikipedia:Notability (people) and Wikipedia:Notability (organizations and companies), particularly to assist editors unfamiliar with this content area.

This guideline is not intended to quick fail articles on individuals who otherwise pass WP:N. Iif an individual does not meet any of these criteria below, they may still meet GNG due to additional factors. For example, a winner of a minor pageant with significant accomplishments in other areas such as acting, business, athletics or academe.

These guidelines are consolidated from various discussions amongst project members and other interested editors. All suggested notability guidelines below are rebuttable if the topic appears to be more suited for inclusion in a list article, particularly if the only notable accomplishment meets the WP:BIO1E standard.

Pageants

[edit]

Beauty pageant contests are likely to meet WP:GNG for an article about the competition itself if they meet the following standards:

Factors that may help establish notability for competitions in a "gray area" could include:

  • Longevity of the pageant, particularly if defunct (example: Miss Europe)
  • National/international prestige accorded to winners
  • Part of an extensive national system of qualifying pageants

Non-notable pageants, absent other WP:GNG criteria, are characterized by:

  • A single competition with no significant system of qualifying pageants
  • Primarily for the selection of a commercial or corporate mascot/model/spokesperson
  • not a qualifying pageant for a higher level competition
  • Lack of longevity: either very new, or discontinued after a relatively short run
  • Minimal, local, or no television/media coverage

Examples of pageants that may not normally meet the above criteria but pass GNG could be those like Miss Tibet, where the significance is the political and ethnic/cultural impact for an exile population.

People

[edit]

Beauty pageant contestants and pageant winners are generally presumed to most likely meet WP:GNG for notability and a stand-alone article if they have accomplished any of the following:

  • Gained significant independent, national or international media attention for individual accomplishments in addition to a pageant title; i.e. where a pageant title, standing alone, might be insufficient, it may be included as one of several other factors in establishing notability. (Examples: ...)
  • winners of similar major national pageants (like Miss America) in other countries (defined as what??)
  • winners of qualifying pageants that feed into the above... (like what?)
  • Exceptions to notability for individuals with significant independent third-party coverage might be WP:BIO1E situations, particularly "first Miss ______ contestant/winner to do foo. The BIO1E guideline should be consulted. These individuals generally should be covered on the page about the pageant itself with appropriate redirects created to aid searching.
  • Pageant contestants, absent other WP:GNG criteria, who generally should be included in a list article and not a stand-alone article include:
    • ??State-level pageant winners who have no other accomplishments with significant coverage in independent, third-party sources.
    • Miss Congeniality winners where a list article for these individuals exists.
    • Winners of obscure national or international pageants that have stand-alone articles on wikipedia. (such as???
  • Non-notable pageant contestants, absent other WP:GNG criteria, should not be created for:
    • ?State-level pageant contestants
    • "Junior Miss" or Little Miss Sunshine-type pageants for preteen children

These individuals may still meet GNG if they have additional significant accomplishments.
