David (D.C.) Martinez (born February 5, 1981) is a former American football running back. He played college football at San Diego State. Martinez was San Diego State’s all-time leader in rushing yards until 2014 and Mountain West Player of the Year - NCAA Division I. He went on to become a Speed Trainer for Bishop Gorman Prep School, U.N.L.V, Las Vegas Thunder, LV Light and the 51’s.

Early years[edit]

Martinez attended Chaparral High School in Las Vegas, Nevada. As a senior, he was the High School Student-Athlete Of the Year for Nevada after rushing for 1,491 yards on 123 carries with 19 touchdowns on the field, then on the basketball court his 9.0 assists per game led men's basketball in Nevada, while finishing his career third on the states all-time list for total assists, all while maintaining a 3.6GPA. During his H.S. career, he ran for 4,152 yards on 494 attempts with 59 touchdowns only being topped by Steven Jackson and Demarco Murray. Martinez was rated as a three-star recruit. He committed to San Diego State University to play college football.

College career[edit]

As a true freshman in 1999, Martinez played in all 13 games, making one start. He finished second on the team behind Jonas Lewis with 752 rushing yards on 125 carries with eight touchdowns. After Lewis entered the 2000 NFL Draft, Martinez became the starter his sophomore year in 2000. He played in all 13 games and rushed for 1,876 on 276 carries with 20 touchdowns. The rushing yards broke the school record held by George Jones since 1995. Martinez rushed for 2,018 yards in the 2001 season. In the 2002 Las Vegas Bowl, he was awarded Mountain West Player of the Year with 2,244 yards rushing on 268 carries with 26 touchdowns.

Coaching career[edit]

Martinez became the Speed Trainer for Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas, Nevada in 2008 and would be at the school for six seasons. In his tenure as Gorman’s Speed Trainer, Martinez assisted head coach Tony Sanchez in achieving an 85-5 record and led Gorman to #1 in the Nation with a 4A Championship every season. In 2014, the Board of Regents voted to hire Sanchez as Head Coach for UNLV, who then brought Martinez to UNLV as the Speed Trainer in 2015. Martinez remained with UNLV through the 2016 season before moving on to become Youth Athletics Director for UNLV and starting D.C. Athletics Training Company with facilities in Las Vegas and San Diego.

Community service [edit]

Martinez created the Rebels “Feed the Homeless” Foundation that collected food from various hotels for athletes to distribute to the homeless community. Martinez has served as a Board Member and Field Director for 100 Ways Nonprofit for underprivileged athletes in the inner cities since 2014. This led to a partnership between D.C. Athletics and Sam Garnes Foundation hosting skills camps across the nation for children in impoverished communities. With constant involvement in the community from the NFL Play 60 to Juvenile Detention Center, Martinez earned City Life Magazine’s “Mentor of the Year” in 2017.
