Recordings

[edit]

The following listings begin with 1932; this is the year in which Josef Roisman became the quartet's leader as 1st Violin, replacing Emil Hauser, and Alexander Schneider joined the quartet as 2nd violin. Thus with the exception of István Ipolyi, who stayed until 1936, the quartet had nearly completed its transformation to its relatively stable line-up of four Russians, and achieved its long-lasting reputation.

Although most entries in the following lists are taken either from actual LPs and CDs and their liner notes or from trustworthy print or online sources, the lists are supplemented by a discography prepared by Sony Classical,[1] apparently for their own use in identifying stock numbers. However this Sony discography contains a number of errors in identifying recording dates, personnel, and in some instances even compositions and composers. All information from this Sony discography as shown below that could not be verified from another source is preceded by an asterisk [*] as being possibly questionable.

Square brackets indicate the initials of the violist, or of the second violinist; e.g., [Va=II] indicates István Ipolyi as violist. Several recording dates are either unspecified or unknown. All of the earlier recordings were first issued as shellac 78 rpm records, many later reissued as vinyl LPs, and subsequently in CD format. First issue of the late recordings was directly to LP format. All recordings are monophonic unless specified as stereo.

  1. ^ All information presented here is subject to error, particularly recording date and venue, since these are almost never publicly identified by the original issuing record label, but rather are discovered and shared by a community of amateurs who are interested in particular performing artists of the 20th century. The Budapest String Quartet was under contract with HMV/Victor from 1925 through June 1940, at which time they signed with Columbia, remaining there for the rest of their careers. The problem of identifying any recording information is complicated by these companies having been sold and merged several times. While original recording data for some early jazz and blues artists is carefully maintained and provided on CD reissues, due to the relative lack of interest in classical music these data can be harder to track down than for more popular genres, and in some cases may possibly even be permanently lost. Many official Sony reissues on CD attempt to provide recording dates, but some recordings included may show only months without specific dates, or years only; or even contradict information given on other releases. Also compare the problems with Sony's discography, discussed below in reference to the Odyssey reissue of the Bartók Quartet No. 2 and other recordings, or the apparent date/personnel discrepancy in the 1920s version of Dvořák's "American" Quartet.
  2. ^ Initials of members other than Joseph Roisman as first violin, Alexander Schneider as second violin, Boris Kroyt as viola, and Mischa Schneider as cello are italicized here for clearer identification.
  3. ^ a b The listings of publishers' releases in this table are not comprehensive. Publishers usually assign unique stock numbers for different markets, and frequently reissue certain recordings. For listings of additional reissues, and other information, see the excellent "Recording & Discography - Budapest String Quartet & its members...", compiled by Youngrok Lee, at http://fischer.hosting.paran.com/music/Budapest/discography-budapestsq.htm, used here with Mr. Lee's gracious permission.
  4. ^ a b c d e f g h i j k l m n o p q The Sony Classical discography for the Budapest String Quartet is presented as Appendix 2 in Brandt, Nat (1993). Con Brio: Four Russians Called the Budapest String Quartet. Oxford University Press, USA. This was apparently created for Sony's own use in identifying stock numbers. However, their discography omits many recordings; it also contains a number of errors in identifying recording dates, personnel, and in some instances even compositions and composers. All identifiable entries from the Sony discography are referenced here.

  11. ^ Columbia LPs ML-5393, MS-6074, M3L-262, M3S-606: The reason for four separate release numbers is that although by the late 1950s Columbia was recording in stereo, many buyers still did not have stereo playback equipment, so the recordings were also issued in mixed mono, with both left and right channels heard through a single speaker. Here an "ML" prefix indicates mono, whereas the "MS" prefix indicates stereo. "M3L" and "M3S" are boxed sets, with the number indicating the number of discs. Other numbering systems were used at various times. "Columbia" is a full-price imprint, while "Odyssey" is one of Columbia's discount labels reissued at a later date.

  14. ^ a b c d Beethoven Quartet No. 5: According to booklet notes to Sony MH2K-62873 written by Harris Goldsmith, the members Hauser/ Roisman/ Ipolyi/ Son recorded the third (Andante cantabile) movement only, of Quartet No. 5, probably in 1928, for HMV/Victor. Later on Sep 15, 1941, the members Roisman/ Alexander Schneider/ Kroyt/ Mischa Schneider recorded a shortened version of the second (Menuetto) movement, omitting repeats, as a filler for the final side of Columbia's 78 rpm album of Beethoven's Quartet No. 9, Op. 59 No. 3. The Budapest's first complete recording of this quartet was performed for Columbia in 1951.

  40. ^ Although Debussy's "Danse sacrée et danse profane" is written for cross-strung harp and string quintet, it is frequently performed with other instrumentation, including a standard concert harp, and strings ranging from a quartet to a small string orchestra.
  41. ^ The numbering of several of Dvořák's compositions is inconsistent. For instance, the E flat major quartet, B.92, is here designated by Columbia as String Quartet No. 7 rather than No. 10. Then on Columbia's LP M-32792 the "American" Quartet No. 12 in F major Op. 96 is designated as Quartet No. 6.
  42. ^ Without further verified information it is unclear whether Jac Gorodetzky or Alexander Schneider was 2nd violinist in this 1955 performance of Dvořák's "Slavonic" Quartet.
  43. ^ According to Youngrok Lee's discography, this Dvořák String Quartet No. 12 was recorded some time in 1926, with Joseph Roisman as 2nd violin. But Roisman did not join the Budapest String Quartet until September 1927; this position was held by Imre Pogany until June or July 1927.
