Background:
Kim Abeles was born on, August 8th of 1952 (71 years of age). Abeles was born in Richmond, MO, who is a visual artist whose work address feminism, geography, biography, and the environment. Her work addresses science literacy, civic involvement, and society. She has created initiatives in collaboration with the National Park Service, the California Science Center, and medical clinics and mental health departments.
Accomplishments:
- In California, Colorado, and Florida, she has developed projects for the California Science Center, air pollution control organizations, medical facilities, mental health departments, and natural history museums.
- Got a scholarships from the Pollack-Krasner Foundation
- The California Community Foundation, and the J. Paul Getty Trust Fund for the Visual Arts, Abeles was awarded the 2013 Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship.
-She invented a technique to make pictures out of the smog in the air in 1987
-Smog Collectors made her work widely known across the country and beyond.
-She just finished a series of sculptural bags for the Santa Monica Mountains-based Camp Ground: Arts, Corrections and Fire Management, which integrates artists within the Los Angeles County Fire Department to collaborate with both the professional and inmate workforces.
-The Los Angeles County Arts Commission, the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), and The Armory Center for the Arts oversaw the project's administration.
-She worked as an artist-in-residence at the Institute of Forest Genetics in 2018.
-The El Dorado Arts Council oversaw the Resilience project, which was supported by the NEA. The National Geospatial Intelligence Agency, Berkeley Art Museum, California African American Museum, MOCA, LACMA, Brooklyn Museum, and other public collections have her work.
-The Center for Art + Environment, Nevada Museum of Art, is home to the notebooks, books, and process records of artist Abeles.
