History

[edit]

Schoolhouse Electric Co. is an American manufacturer of period lighting fixtures and glass shades. Owner and founder Brian Faherty started the company in 2003 after discovering a cache of decades-old cast iron moulds in an upstate New York warehouse. The antique moulds were purchased, restored and put back into production. The collection represented some of the best examples of true American lighting design and inspired the founder to reproduce more than 100 light fixtures from the early 1900s to the middle of the twentieth century.

Schoolhouse Electric Co.'s fixtures and shades are authentically American in design and are used in historic and contemporary buildings and homes. Fixture designs range from early electric to streamline modern[1]. The companies lighting parts are handcrafted by small vendors throughout the United States[2] and then each fixture is assembled made-to-order in Portland, Oregon.[3]

The company has showrooms in Portland, Oregon, [4] and in New York..[5] They publish a mail order catalog and have an e-commerce web site.

The company uses a closed loop manufacturing process so there is nothing that goes down the drain and they use 100% renewable wind generated power[6]. They offer optional high efficiency Energy Star GU24 pin-mounted fluorescent sockets for lower energy consumption.

The company recently introduced a first ever Artist Series [7] and a line of industrial chic fixtures with exposed parts and cloth wiring[8].
