In a 2023 survey, the Wikimedia Foundation found that less than 20% of its contributors identify as female. Together, we can improve the digital knowledge and visibility of female and gender nonconforming-identifying artists.

PAMM Wikimedian in Residence program seeks to improve visual arts content online through Wikimedia-related public programming and Wikipedia articles. For this purpose, the series of public programs co-organized by the Residence in collaboration with museum staff has gathered an international and multilingual network of Wiki practitioners, visual artists, educators, students, scholars, librarians, museum professionals, and social justice advocates from South Florida and beyond.[1]

The series of events included Educator + Teen Workshop Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon (March 2023 and 2024),[2][3] Wikimedia a (New) Topic for Museums: Intro Training (April 2023),[4]Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon: Miami Summit (May 2023).[5]

[edit]

The event series started with an online demonstration and celebration of Women's History Month for museum staff on March 8, 2023. In the following week, on March 16, 2023, the WIR and the education department hosted the first iteration of the Educator + Teen Workshop Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon, a workshop and media literacy project for the PAMM Teen Arts Council (PTAC) and their favorite educators.[2]

After a pause in public programs for the fall of 2023 due tosignificant undertakings on Wikidata, Wiki programs resumed in the spring of 2024 with the second-year edition of the Educator + Teen Workshop Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon, on March 7, 2024. In the two-hour event, attendees celebrated Women’s History Month by discussing the gender gap on Wikimedia projects in the education studio and engaging with reference materials and publications in the PAMM library. The in-person training and editing session brought forward the work of female artists on view in the galleries.[3]

Date: May 20th, 2023
Time: 10 AM - 5PM EST
Location: Pérez Art Museum Miami

Join Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) for the tenth annual campaign of Art+Feminism. Participate in an all-day Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon designed to improve coverage of gender, feminism, and the arts on the internet, through Wikipedia articles.

In a 2011 survey, the Wikimedia Foundation found that less than 10% of its contributors identify as female. Together, we can improve the digital knowledge and visibility of female and gender nonconforming-identifying artists from PAMM's collection featuring artists from the U.S. Latino experience, the African diaspora, Latin America, and the Caribbean.

The day includes two Introduction to Editing Wikipedia training sessions, and opportunities to engage in gallery experiences, participate in fun activities, join communal editing tables hosted by members of PAMM's Teen Arts Council, and enjoy the end-of-day reception. The day concludes with an in-gallery discussion exploring the 2023 campaign theme Collective Action, featuring artworks from PAMM's permanent collection.

People of all gender identities and expressions are welcome and encouraged to attend, and no prior Wikipedia editing experience is required. Participants are encouraged to bring their own laptops and power cords, and the communal edit-a-thon will include tutorials for the beginner Wikipedian, ongoing editing support, and plenty of reference materials from PAMM's library. Participants are encouraged to bring their own reusable water bottle to help reduce waste. Wi-Fi and complimentary refreshments will be provided.

All Wikimedian in Residence programs at PAMM are free with registration. Museum admission is included.*
