On 5 October 1945, the Republic of Indonesia formed its first armed forces, the People's Security Army (often shortened as 'TKR') by reorganizing the previous People's Security Agency, a security corps tasked to secure the Independence of Indonesia. The army consisted of the remnants of the Japanese voluntary collaborator army the PETA battalions, and former members previously recruited by the Royal Netherlands East Indies Army during the World War II.
The People's Security Army was the defense force of Indonesia that consisted of mostly Ground forces, Navy, and Air force. The army was commanded by Major General Soedirman from 1945 to 1949 and was mostly involved in guerilla warfare against the Dutch Forces during the Indonesian National Revolution.
The army was reorganized three times due to instability caused by pro-independence militias that are not aligned with the central government, causing an internal conflict and political crisis within the government and often attempted coups or political kidnapping.
